Watch me try to capture a drift car for the first time ever on a metal plate using my large format camera during the @mbdriftseries event at @rockinghamspeedway . NO AUTOFOCUS or TRACKING! Just ME!

I used @zebra_dry_plates dry plate tintypes and developed them on site in the historical old NASCAR darkroom in the media center. For a first attempt I think it’s hilarious I got a crash lol I have more plates to develop and I’m pumped to see if I got something in focus!

Normally people shoot at 1/80 - 1/30 a second for drifting but I’m limited by the sensitivity of the plate, which is ISO 2 and the aperture on my lens which the widest was 5.6. So I had to shoot at 1/15 of a second and as the sun was going down, I had to shoot at an even slower shutter speed for those plates 1/8s 😬

Settings: ISO 2, 1/15s, f/5.6

The Kilns, on the border of Northamptonshire and Rutland at Wakerley were built during the Great War in order to process iron rich material quarried locally for the war effort. They were never used, as World War One came to an end before they were finished and along with it the demand for iron.

They’ve been sitting here unused whilst seemingly simultaneously both alive and dead, for a little over a hundred years now. Huge chunks have fallen but there’s much, much more to come, deep fissures spider all around. I doubt they’ll see another century.

It seemed fitting to explore total chemical exhaustion for this image, so went with 3ml Rodinal 1-100, one hour stand with zero agitation. It came out remarkably well, though sadly not as degraded as the structures depicted.

Thanks to Farmer Ian for his kindness, his interest and allowing me access onto his land to make the picture.

Final shot vs behind the scenes with @ilfordphoto Pan F Plus 🎞️

Nothing more special than large format film photography. Everything is so much slower. And that’s why I love this format so much.

In the studio with a model, it feels really intimate. You’re not rushing you’re moving slow, talking, adjusting, waiting for the right second to click. It’s less about “getting the shot” and more about actually being present with the person in front of you.

I was digging through the archives looking for this first image and I found a few others I thought I’d share while I’m at it.

The bigger the format the bigger the pain in the ass it is to shoot. I’ve had a hell of a time with my @intrepidcamera over the years, through sun and snow, sleet and slide; nothing beats a big ol’ sheet of film.
