Dear artist, dear human,

Retire to your home tonight, whatever that may mean to you. Perhaps home is found in the habits you inherited from your father, or in the strength and ache you find in the stories of your mother. Perhaps it's nobody at all, nobody but yourself.

You have been observing all your life. You have been watching, learning, and adapting, taking what the world has given you and slowly turning it into something of your own, you think.

We create because we feel, and we create because we remember. We create because there are things within us that cannot remain untouched, and because somewhere within us is the knowledge that one day, we will be gone.

We create when we are children, and we do it when we are old. When there is no one left to call, we rearrange photographs on a table. We repeat recipes we learned decades ago. We tell stories of people who are no longer here until they feel almost alive again. Dear human, Is that not creativity as well?

Perhaps that is why we keep creating, even as we grow older. We know that our homes will change, that our hands will become unfamiliar to us, and that the people we love will one day become memories themselves. Still, we make things, preserve things, and share things.

Retire tonight, and remember all that you can, but remember nothing with the burden of having to keep it forever. You are here now, and you are meant to live this life while it is yours to live. You are meant to feel it all, to lose some of it, to love some of it, and to make something of whatever remains.

Because perhaps that is all creativity has ever been: the human attempt to take what we have been given and, for however long we are here, make it mean something.

Dear human, dear friend. You must create.
