POSTS STORIES REELS

This channel doesn’t exist without Blake Howard of @ohmpods. I’m so glad I was finally able to tell him that directly, and more, on the finale of “Lanterns”—my 10 year retrospective on THE INVITATION as well as a celebration of my amazing peers. 🍷🏮 #KarynKusama #TheInvitationMovie #OneHeatMinute #HeatMovie #BlakeHoward by @invitation2invitation

This week, co-writer/co-producer of THE INVITATION (and simply one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met), Phil Hay, went *well* out of his way to plug this podcast on @johnaugust (Big Fish) and Craig Mazin’s (@hbo Chernobyl) essential SCRIPTNOTES podcast (what an honor to have my name spoken to these gentlemen on their show). Hearing Phil say everything you hear in the above clip was a viscerally emotional experience for me. This man co-wrote my favorite movie! Yes, Phil has said many nice things about me and the pod in the past but for him to do it for SCRIPTNOTES’ prestigious hosts and very large audience is… on a new level entirely🤯. “An Invitation to THE INVITATION” was made out of creative/emotional desperation. It was selfishly made to provide me with a much-needed outlet. It was made so I could finally articulate why I love this movie. It was made to heal and articulate the loss/losses of my life. Therefore, I am stunned that it has had this kind of reach and impact. I am insanely grateful to Phil & Matt, to John & Craig, and—most of all—to everyone who has listened to this series. I don’t take any of it for granted.❤️🍷 | #PhilHay #MattManfredi #KarynKusama #TheInvitation #TheInvitationMovie #Scriptnotes #JohnAugust #CraigMazin #Chernobyl #TheLastOfUs #ScriptedPodcast #ScreenwritingPodcast #FilmAnalysis #FilmWritingPodcast by @invitation2invitation

If you wanna know how long my backlog of podcasts is, I’m just *now* getting to this great reflection on THE INVITATION (2015) via @ohmpods’ wonderful podcast series “The Decade Project.” Needless to say, I’m deeply, deeply, deeply grateful for such a vibrant and flattering endorsement from one of the titans in the field and my personal “podfather,” @oneblakeminute — thank you, Blake!!!! 🫶🏻🥹🍷💌 by @invitation2invitation

It was my 1st wedding anniversary on Saturday and it’s not a stretch to say that podcasting and THE INVITATION were directly instrumental in that life event occurring at all. After all, those creative endeavors led me to Savannah where I met my wife — where we lived and where we married. 💌🍷💍 by @invitation2invitation

New episode of “Lanterns” with @cowspod is available now and it’s a doozy. We cover everything from quantum superposition to doppelgängers (is THE INVITATION a better movie if Logan Marshall-Green’s unofficial twin Tom Hardy plays the Michiel Huisman role??). RSVP now. Wine optional. 💌🍷 by @invitation2invitation

Last week, I published the 2nd episode of “Lanterns” (a miniseries exploring #KarynKusama’s THE INVITATION ten years on) featuring two of my favorite podcasters: filmmaker @adamvole and writer/video editor @dominicknero, who co-host @eyeoftheduckpod together. Eye of the Duck is a phenomenal series about movies and the scenes that make them special—what David Lynch calls ‘eye of the duck’ scenes.

Considering that Kusama has stated that seeing ERASERHEAD as a child was the most foundational film experience of her life, the Eye of the Duck boys were the perfect folks to talk to—not only about the influence of Lynch on this movie—but the way it functions as a New Yorker’s view of LA, not to mention its ability to capture our failure to reckon with real life pain and tragedy.

Upcoming guests include more of my absolute favorites: @cowspod, @chilivincennes (of @diehardoab), and @oneblakeminute (of @ohmpods).

RSVP now.

Thanks for listening.

“Lanterns” is a miniseries celebrating 10 years of Karyn Kusama’s THE INVITATION (2015) with some of the brightest lights in contemporary film criticism and podcasting.

I’m beyond thrilled that my first guest is film critic, filmmaker, and video essayist, Scout Tafoya (@honorszombie). Scout is a brilliant mind and you can audibly hear me lose my mind as he elaborates on the countless details and treasures that make Kusama’s film so rich and luminous.

Upcoming guests include more of my handpicked favorites: @eyeoftheduckpod, @cowspod, @chilivincennes, and @oneblakeminute. All-Stars only!

You can find “Lanterns” wherever you listen to podcasts—simply search “An Invitation Productions”!

Thanks so much for listening. ❤️🍷🏮 by @invitation2invitation

4 years ago today, I launched “An Invitation to THE INVITATION,” a scripted podcast that recreates the masterful suspense/drama/horror film THE INVITATION (2015) as an audio drama while simultaneously analyzing it scene-by-scene. Directed by Karyn Kusama (JENNIFER’S BODY) and written/produced by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi (DESTROYER), it remains my all-time favorite movie.

This endorsement from its original architects, Hay & Manfredi—told to Craig Mazin (showrunner: CHERNOBYL, THE LAST OF US) and John August (screenwriter: BIG FISH) on their own brilliant podcast, “Scriptnotes”—remains one of the most stupefying results of the whole endeavor.

I don’t know how much podcasting I’ll be doing going forward but no matter what I’m incredibly proud of this series. Its spooky vibe (perfectly captured by composer John Penola) makes for great Autumnal/Halloween listening. Hope you check it out.

Thanks for your support over the years, everyone. 🍷

When I asked one of my favorite musicians of almost 20 years, @big_black_delta, to appear on my new podcast series, “Thematic Content,” all I knew was that I wanted to pay tribute to him/his work while simultaneously connecting his discography to the world of film. Even still, I had no idea I’d end up doing an aural venn diagram between the big ideas of BBD and Christopher Nolan/TENET.

Yet, in analyzing these disparate creators, I uncovered what I see as a profound shared interest: one that centers art and service as inextricable# acts of humanity.

You can hear the entire episode wherever you listen to podcasts. ❤️💙💜 by @invitation2invitation

We’ve got Funicular Fever! 🚋 🥳
So much of 8 MILLION WAYS TO DIE, as my exemplary guest Philip Gawthorne points out, is about status—specifically *low* status—and how that position proffers the desire to better oneself in all manner of ways. To see that theme writ literal during the film’s memorable conclusion is deeply rewarding.

I am *so* pumped to finally share the debut episode of my new series: THEMATIC CONTENT. In typical fashion, these are painstaking audio essays that take way too much time to make but 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️! On the bright side, I’m very happy with the results. A large part of that satisfaction has to do with the quality of my guests… I am genuinely thrilled to say my first is @dominicknero, co-host of one of my absolute favorite podcasts, @eyeoftheduckpod.

During our chat, Dom and I discuss the colossal influence of BLADE RUNNER through the unique lens of dystopian etiquette, the film’s pervasive noir trappings, near-future fascism, and the horrors of (in)humanity that all these conditions create.

Would be honored if you listened! It’s under the same channel as everything else—simply search AN INVITATION PRODUCTIONS whenever you find podcasts. Thanks to everyone for their support, especially those tagged below 💜
