LIVE MUSIC ENCHANTMENT #12
“OUM KALTHUM”
3 years in the making
Live Music Enchantment returns, this time with a deep dive into the legacy of Oum Kalthoum, one of the most influential icons in the Arab world.

🦋 This is not entry level repertoire. Her music requires cultural awareness, emotional depth, and a real understanding of how Arabic music flows. This project is designed to help dancers rise to that level, so that what you feel & what you express are actually aligned with the music.
🦋 Live Music Enchantment is an improvisation based training for intermediate & advanced dancers who are ready to go beyond memorizing steps and develop real skills for working with Arabic music.
🦋 This includes how to interpret lyrics, respond to musical phrasing, and build a relationship with the structure of the song, not just regurgitating choreography.
🦋 If you are ready to enjoy performing with live bands & want to feel more grounded, connected, and intentional in your dancing, this work will support you. If you want to have more authentic, emotionally evocative shows then this will help you.
🦋 But, If you already feel fully confident in your ability to interpret classic Arabic music in a live setting, prepare Oum Kalthoum repertoire, and sustain emotional presence on stage, then keep scrolling; because this project is NOT for you 🙂

What do I teach that no other studio is currently offering?

4 cornerstone programs , 1 that I’ve been teaching for over 20 years 😎 (the shorter 30 min ones I actually designed during covid!)

Why is it important for dancers to crosstrain?

🙋🏻‍♀️ Cultivate a shimmy that can wake the dead💀

🙋🏻‍♀️ Athleticly strengthen & rebalance joints that are either too stiff or too floppy

🙋🏻‍♀️ Update your dance technique w/ 2025 research based methods… not “your mama’s technique” class 😘

🙋🏻‍♀️ Rehab injuries, & ensure you can dance pain-free …..for life!

Two weeks ago, I had the honor of performing the iconic Alf Leila We Leila (1001 Nights) by Oum Kalthoum to a live Arabic band at the Spire Church in Oakland after spending a month-long deep dive into the world of Tarab! I learned that improvisation is more about deep embodiment of the lyrics & meaning and is more of an internal experience vs. simply performing choreography for an audience (more externally focused). When done right, the audience can feel this embodiment and this is what Tarab is all about. Thank you to @involution_studio & @ghanem.ranem for this invaluable experience and @bayareadancer_adriana for the video! #arabic #arabicpoetry #arabicmusic #arabicdancer #bellydancer by @involution_studio

I’ve performed this piece three times in the past month and a half—twice to recorded music and once with a band. It’s been interesting to see how it’s evolved each time. I’m generally the type of dancer who feels like I need something new for every performance. Danced that number? Check. Move on to something new. But sitting with a piece, letting it change organically in a particular venue, with a particular audience, under specific conditions still allows for that newness in a different way.
