I document the gradual decline of memory, transforming a personal experience into a broader reflection on the brutal reality of dementia—a condition that affects millions of people globally. Through my images, the familiarity of the everyday is dissolved into the uncanny, allowing the framed forms to emerge as unstable and fluid. by @ioanaaa.rs

Autopsy of forgetting

The beginning of my research on memory was Autopsy of forgetting, 2023. In this series I focus on incomplete reconstruction of the past. I start from Polaroid frames that I transform through an experimental process designed to break down the original representation. Thus, the Polaroid emulsion goes through several stages: with its removal from the original surface it reaches a fluid state, and the final transfer to another surface becomes destructive. A new image is formed, however, from the ethereal traces of the past. by @ioanaaa.rs

Ioana Rusu (1999) is a visual artist from Suceava, Romania. Her practice is experimental, developing at the intersection of collage, post-photography, installation, and video. Her work is driven by the dynamics of fragmentation and recontextualization, turning collage into a method for analyzing memory, vulnerability, and identity. The artist's methodology unfolds in a fluid territory: between reality and fiction, documentation and interpretation, the immediate everyday and its psychological layers.
Rooted in a Romanian rural background where important issues are rarely discussed, her work observes how micro-social traumas, interpersonal relationships, and the idea of "home" shape an individual's journey. For Ioana, the human mind becomes a territory of transformation—an autobiographical atlas that highlights the tensions between the real, the imaginary, and impermanence.
Ioana Rusu has participated in exhibitions in contexts such as: Romanian Creative Week New Media District (Iași, 2024-2025), Forme Consapevoli Paratissima (Torino, 2025), Homemade Lemonade (La Cave Cluj, 2025), Diploma Show (Bucharest, 2024), Laboratories of Time (UNAGE & MoB Art Fair Bucharest, 2024), Common Matters (Delta Gallery, Eger, 2024), and Fabulating About a Gelato Machine (Brașov Art Museum, 2023). The works have also been featured in residency and mentorship programs, including Culture Moves Europe (Tirana, 2025), Art in Public Space Accelerator (Bucharest, 2024), and Accelerator Brașov (2023). by @ioanaaa.rs
