We had a great time bringing these costumes and props back to life for Bradford's Radical Joy Exhibition, now on display at Loading Bay until December.

These two “Sunbeams” and one “Bee Creature” with its caged propeller are from TATTOO (2003). This was IOU’s largest outdoor production, with strange mechanical creatures, giant inflatable forms and human-sized bees.

These refurbished costumes are from the new IOU public archive, which will be unveiled next year as part of the IOU50 anniversary programme

Tattoo premiered in 2003 outside @eurekamuseum in Halifax, and was then staged around the UK for large audiences, including a free outdoor show for 2,000 people at @sirf_stockton, and later in Woolwich as part of @gdifestival

IOU are seeking an experienced Project Archivist to lead the cataloguing and development of our archive as part of the Archives Revealed-funded project, running alongside IOU’s 50th anniversary programme.

This is a key role to unlock one of the UK’s "most important archives of experimental performance” by cataloguing 1,880 records spanning five decades, and in doing so moving IOU's archive from storage into public life and creating a sustainable approach to its future development.

Fixed-term contract
3 days / 22.8 hours per week
15 month contract starts January 2027

For 50 years, IOU has created unforgettable performances across Calderdale and beyond.
As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations -IOU50, we are creating a new archive which will preserve not only props, photographs, films and production materials, but also the voices of the people who experienced IOU's work first-hand.
To do this we're collecting the stories, memories and experiences that shaped IOU over the last five decades.

Were you in the audience? Did you perform, volunteer, take part in a workshop or help make a production happen?

We’d love to hear your story.

You don’t need to remember dates or have lots of detail – we’re interested in your experience, the moments that stayed with you and what IOU meant to you.

Stories from the Archive
At the heart of IOU50 is the creation of the IOU Archive and this is now well under way.

We are delighted to have been awarded an Archives Revealed Cataloguing Grant from @nationalarchivesuk - helping us to unlock one of the UK’s 'most important archives of experimental performance' by cataloguing 1,880 records spanning five decades of radical artistic practice.

From hand-drawn designs and production files to photographs and films of iconic performances, our IOU50 archive project will turn our long-time stored collection into a publicly searchable resource, revealing the ideas, experiments and innovations that helped shape contemporary outdoor arts and making them available to inspire the next generation of artists, researchers and audiences.

There's a fresh new look at the IOU Hostel

The team have been busy installing the IOU50 exhibition in our shared spaces and guest bedrooms. The exhibition gives an early glimpse into the IOU Archive featuring images and poetry from past productions. Look out for more IOU50 news coming soon

In our latest blog, Creative Director Claire Tymon shares the five-minute provocation she presented last week at @ioucreationcentre A Curious Tapestry: Crafting New Cultural Ecologies symposium.

“Rather than presenting a case study, I shared a five-minute provocation that has been quietly emerging through my practice over the past year.

What if the work never ends?

As projects finish, funding changes, organisations evolve and people move on, what is it we’re really trying to sustain?

The conversation that followed was one of the most thoughtful I’ve been part of in a long time. We talked about trust, stewardship, letting go, shared ownership, grief, regeneration and what happens when the work we’ve nurtured is ready to grow beyond us.
