How lucky I am that Italy is just a 9-hour drive away, and I can go there whenever I feel like it.
By plane, it’s basically two episodes of a TV series, but when I drive, I don’t have to fit my life around a schedule.

She’s my friend, my grandmother, my lounge, an illustration of my life, someone I can be a little wild with and learn manners from. Not every encounter with her feels like a pleasant trip down memory lane, but somehow, we’ve managed to preserve that original spark. And every time I book a villa there for a week or so, I feel like I’m 14 again, like I’ve just received a text from the cutest boy in school.

✍🏼 the hope of creating something magnificent while economizing on your own resources reeks of sixth-grade-level cheating. Just as idiotic as getting sucked into forty minutes of political and inflation talk with the neighbor you were actually planning to quietly slip past; shaking a hand that’s offered to you like a dead fish; or making peace with offensively polite treatment.

You accept that total surrender comes with both joy and painful vulnerability. It can lead you inward, to God, to a therapist, to AI. Eventually, you may feel like slamming the door and hitting the gas until you get lost somewhere in an Umbrian village, where an evening at a winery costs about as much as therapy.

There, you’ll learn the beautiful words Sauvignon and Nero d’Avola, and forget the unnecessary “impossible.”

Because if life gives you a pig and some acorns, why the hell not make prosciutto?

Fattoria Svetoni, an Italian winery founded in 1865 in Montepulciano, Tuscany.

If it so happens that, in the bliss of agriturismo, you find yourself driving a Volkswagen, a Fiat, or a Faccio through a land where the pomeriggio meal is almost a sacred ritual, planned in the morning amid the loud, overlapping voices of the whole family, and your eye catches fields of neat, perfectly aligned vineyards: stop.
