Geotechnical rope access presents a distinct set of challenges. Even where work has been thoroughly assessed and carefully planned, ground conditions can be variable, not fully understood and subject to change as work progresses.

Managing this uncertainty requires more than a risk assessment completed before work begins. Teams need to understand what is known, recognise the limitations of the available information and, critically, be prepared to reassess their approach when actual conditions differ from those anticipated.

At ITEC 2026, Galina Hobson, CMIOSH, SHEQ Director at CAN, will explore how uncertainty can be incorporated into the planning and delivery of geotechnical rope access work.

Her session will consider how available information about the ground informs planning and access decisions, while recognising the limitations of that information. Galina will also consider competence and decision making responsibilities, the importance of dynamic risk assessment, and the role technicians at the workface play in recognising, communicating and responding to changing conditions.

While the session is grounded in geotechnical operations, the principle has wider relevance across rope access. Plans are developed using the information available at the time, but conditions can change. Effective planning therefore needs to account not only for what is known, but for how teams will identify and respond when reality differs from the plan.

The same type of rope access equipment can be manufactured and certified to different standards depending on where in the world it is produced and used.

For an international industry, understanding those differences is an important part of making informed and safe equipment choices.

At ITEC 2026, Tore Rønstad will examine the different equipment standards used around the world, why multiple standards can exist for the same type of product, and the progress being made through international ISO standardisation.

He will also look at Notified Bodies, what their role is, how requirements differ between regions, and the potential risks associated with the misuse of Notified Body certifications.

Drawing on more than 20 years in rope access and extensive involvement in European and international standardisation, Tore will bring a valuable perspective to navigating equipment standards across borders.

Environmental conditions can place additional demands on rescuers, affect how teams perform and introduce further challenges when managing a casualty.

At ITEC 2026, Josh Caddy, Lead Technical Trainer and Emergency Response Consultant at Omada Performance Concepts, will explore rescue operations in high heat and high humidity, drawing on his experience across technical rescue, emergency response, and military operations.

The session will explore how heat and humidity can influence rescue planning, staffing, equipment and PPE, alongside crew fatigue, hydration, cooling and heat acclimatisation. Josh will cover how teams can prepare for the additional demands of hot and humid environments before a rescue is required, and the additional challenges involved in managing an injured casualty during a prolonged rescue.

The session concludes with a discussion, allowing attendees to consider the implications for their own operations.

Preparing for a serious workplace incident starts with doing everything possible to prevent one. But preparedness also means knowing what to do if one does occur.

At ITEC 2026, Tina Lung, Principal Lawyer at DWF Group, will use a case study to examine the legal processes that can follow a serious incident.

Tina will cover responding to regulators, and what organisations can put in place beforehand to be better prepared.

ITEC 2026 takes place on 7–8 October at the Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel.
