Dragons imagery is common in Buddhism. As Buddhism spread through Japan from the sixth century onwards, the dragon was also incorporated into the county’s native religious, Shintoism. 

Dragons, which dislike filth and protect against disease, were a perfect fit with Shintoism emphasis on purity and cleanliness.
