I broke this mirror's reflection, - to make it bird-safe. I engraved on it, freehand, inspired by Audubon's 19th century ornithological paintings. Now it's in the cedar forest, which gives the background a nice darkness enhancing the engraving’s contrast. Why engraving an outdoor mirror? – hm…I've noticed how popular large mirrors are in our modern gardens - for directing reflected light or playing with the prismatic effect of nature and its reflections in the greenery. While this cool, mirrors can be just as dangerous to birds as windows: in both cases, birds mistake the reflected foliage or sky for reality. – and yes, unfortunately, fatal bird strikes can happen. I have these three wonderful creatures over the summer, helping us at the farm to manage the weeds. - I hadn’t dared thinking of the learnings they offer, the fun and entertainment that comes with these very individual sentient beings! They come from, my friend Lauren’s “Small Spade Farm”, - she is a registered breeder of Dwarf Nigerian Dairy goats - . These animals receive what each animal should have: respect, care and plenty of space to live social, instinctive, good lives! Come join into a WS that results in you saving birds colliding with windows and glass-railings! May 31th at PECAC! This is a playful, hands-on art-making workshop on nativ-plants, bird-friendly gardens and bird-safe windows. We start with a short explorative sketching/photography fieldtrip: walking through Delhi Park to visualize how birds see patterns and take inspiration for our own art-making. PrinceEdward County is a vital stopover for migrating birds. On their journeys, however, more than about 25 million birds die each year from window collisions in Canada alone. Why is that? Research shows how birds mistake reflections of sky and trees in glass and become victims of these optical illusions. In this workshop, you’ll craft your own decorative bird-safe window designs that function as decals. Patterns by foliage, bark, fractal light, natural forms, and Art Nouveau, or geometric shapes will be our inspirations. Most of us think bird strikes only happen at high-rise buildings. But no, science tells us that over 400 million birds die at windows and glass facades of residential buildings (in North America alone). That's why this weekend I treated the windows of this cabin in the woods. First, I looked from the inside out, noticing the many horizontal lines of the nearby cedar branches, and freehand-cut vinyl window film. While doing this, I listened to the sounds of the forest: cracking twigs, singing migratory birds… I am so aware that the birdsong I hear comes from the animals that successfully made the migration this spring—despite the many dangers they had to overcome. I am amazed, grateful, and humbled. Doch nein, die Wissenschaft sagt uns, dass über 400 Millionen Vögel an Fenstern und Glasfassaden von Wohnhäusern in Nordamerika sterben. Deshalb habe ich dieses Wochenende die Fenster dieser Hütte im Wald behandelt. Zuerst habe ich von innen nach außen geschaut, die vielen horizontalen Linien der nahen Zedernzweige bemerkt und handgeschnittene Vinyl-Fensterfolie freihändig angebracht. Währenddessen lauschte ich den Geräuschen des Waldes: knackende Äste, singende Zugvögel…Mir ist so sehr bewusst dass die Vogelstimmen die ich hoere, von den Tieren kommen die ihre Reise erfolgreich geschafft haben diesen Fruehling – trotz der vielen Gefahren die es zu überwinden galt.
