The Importance of a Skatepark as a Safe Space for Children and Youth in Old Town Mombasa

Old Town Mombasa is a unique urban environment characterized by its rich Swahili heritage, narrow streets, historic buildings, dense residential areas, commercial activity, and a vibrant young population. While the area possesses significant cultural and historical value, the limited availability of safe, accessible and dedicated recreational spaces presents a challenge for children and young people. In such an environment, the development of a community skatepark could provide much more than a place for recreation—it could become a safe social space where young people can develop physically, socially and creatively.

1. Providing a Safe Space for Young People

One of the most important roles of a skatepark in Old Town would be to provide children and youth with a designated environment where they can spend their free time safely. In densely populated urban areas, children may have limited access to open spaces for physical activity. Streets and public spaces can be dominated by traffic, commercial activities and other urban pressures.

A well-designed skatepark would create a controlled environment where young people can participate in skateboarding, BMX, roller skating and other activities without having to use busy roads or unsuitable public spaces.

2. Promoting Physical and Mental Well-being

Skateboarding is an active sport that develops balance, coordination, strength, flexibility and body awareness. A skatepark would therefore encourage young people to participate in regular physical activity rather than spending excessive amounts of time in sedentary activities.

Beyond physical health, skateboarding can also contribute to mental well-being. The skatepark can become a place where young people learn that failure is part of improvement—a valuable lesson that extends beyond sport.
