WOMEN AND ARCHIVING

For centuries, women have been creating — in painting, sculpture, photography, poetry, literature and performance.

And yet, so little memory of women’s artistic work has been preserved.

We can be grateful that paintings by Artemisia Gentileschi, sculptures by Camille Claudel, or photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron are still visible today.

But how much do we really know about how these women worked?
About their process, their experiments, their failures, their daily practice, their way of seeing?

And how many other women created extraordinary work that was never archived, never considered important enough to preserve — and simply disappeared?

Archiving is not only about preserving the past.
It is about deciding what will be remembered in the future.

This is why we are putting so much time, energy and love into archiving my photographic and film work of the last 42 years.

The first result is a 10-volume catalogue raisonné of my Polaroid archive.

Thousands of images. Decades of experiments, encounters, women, bodies, ideas and visions — brought together so they will not disappear.

And this is only the beginning.

More will come.

A very special thank you to @pierredalcorso , @maximo.nm , @sarah_moheieldin and @electrarchives for helping to make this enormous work possible.

Women created history.
Now we have to make sure their history is kept. by @irisbrosch_art

Today is the International Day of Peace. 🕊️

The United Nations created this day with a profound idea:
peace cannot only be negotiated between governments.
It has to begin in the minds of us all.

But how do we create peace when the world around us is filled with war and suffering?

Sometimes I feel powerless.

So I do what I know how to do: I create images.

This year, at Photo Schweiz, I created a tableau vivant — Women for Peace.

A vision of women as Peace Madonnas — as a forces of transformation for our future.

I believe women have far more power than society gives us space to express.

And I believe we have the power to create the future we want.

A future, of course, with men — men who are not afraid to be in touch with their own femininity, sensitivity and strength.

Because we need each other.

Peace is something we have to imagine — and build — together.

Women for peace—hope, love, and light.

I am currently working on my archive with Shere Hite, the pioneering feminist and author whose groundbreaking research transformed the way we think about female sexuality and identity.

Together, we developed a visual language that reimagined the iconography of women, using Shere’s own body as the medium. Through simple yet deeply symbolic images, we explored feminism, spirituality, and culture—creating new perspectives on the female body and its place in society. by @irisbrosch_art

Iris Brosch first met Shere Hite in 1991 in Paris when she photographed her for ELLE Germany.

These photographs, taken at the Café de Flore in Paris around 1992, capture more than a portrait—they reflect a meeting of two creative minds.

The Café de Flore has long been a legendary gathering place for artists, writers, philosophers, and free thinkers. It was no coincidence that these two women met in Paris, a city that has always celebrated creativity, intellectual freedom, and self-expression.

Paris offers a unique atmosphere where ideas can flourish and individuality is embraced. For both Iris Brosch and Shere Hite, it was the perfect setting to pause—at least briefly—from their demanding work and enjoy the French art of sharing a coffee.

Yet even during this quiet moment, they never truly stopped working. Their conversation naturally turned to future editorial projects, discussing concepts for upcoming cover shoots for publications such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and The New York Times Magazine. They exchanged ideas about visual storytelling and about how women can embrace both femininity and strength—showing that power and grace are not opposites, but qualities that can exist beautifully together.

These images remain a testament not only to a memorable encounter in Paris but also to a shared belief in the importance of creativity, dialogue, and the evolving representation of women.

Autoportrait

In 2011, artist and photographer Iris Brosch created a series of self-portraits. It was a time before selfies had become part of everyday culture, when artist and curator Doris Kloster invited her to participate in the exhibition She Views Herself.

Preparing for the exhibition, Iris Brosch realized that, despite having photographed some of the world’s most celebrated women—from Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigová, and Heidi Klum to countless editorials for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and other international publications—she had created remarkably few self-portraits of her own.

This realization inspired her to turn the camera on herself. The resulting series explores identity, transformation, and the many roles a woman can embody. From princess to chador, from long hair to a radical haircut, each image becomes both a personal reflection and an artistic performance, revealing different facets of the self.

At the heart of the series lies a simple but fundamental question: Why can’t women decide for themselves how they want to look? Why does a woman’s appearance continue to provoke such intense public debate? Why has the chador become such a contested symbol in societies that are still largely shaped by male perspectives?

Shouldn’t it be up to each woman alone to decide how she wants to present herself and how she chooses to dress?

Rather than offering answers, Autoportrait invites viewers to reflect on identity, freedom, and self-determination. The photographs challenge cultural expectations and question who has the authority to define femininity, beauty, and the female body. Ultimately, the series is a celebration of a woman’s right to choose—for herself, and on her own terms.

"There was a quiet melancholy in the air. A sense of a final season closing. A chapter of fashion history drawing to its end." — Iris Brosch

In 2002, as Yves Saint Laurent prepared to leave the stage, photographer Iris Brosch captured a fleeting moment of history within the designer's Paris atelier. Featuring iconic muse Inna Zobova, this rare series of Polaroids serves as a bridge between memory, transformation, and the profound legacy of a fashion visionary.

Beyond a simple photoshoot, these images reveal the spirit of a Maison built on trust, artistic exchange, and a deep respect for the feminine form.
