10 things Burning Man taught me about Prime Maturity 🔥

I went expecting art, dust, music and freedom. What I didn’t expect was to find such a strong 40+ culture. People in their 40s, 50s and 60s weren’t watching younger people have the adventure. They were building, dancing, creating, loving, leading and starting over. For someone studying what happens to women and identity itself after 40, Burning Man became an unexpected Prime Maturity field study.

10 things I brought home:

1. FOMO is bigger than fear.
At some point, missing your own life becomes scarier than failing, being judged or being “too old.”

2. Maturity and play are not opposites.
Growing older doesn’t mean becoming more serious.

3. Your body is not an expiration date.
Age doesn’t cancel sensuality, movement or visibility.

4. Freedom changes after 40.
Less proving. More choosing.

5. Contribution feels better than consumption.
Belonging comes from participation.

6. Independence is not isolation.
You can be self-reliant and still need people.

7. Intensity is not intimacy.
Wild doesn’t always mean deep.

8. Identity gets better when nobody asks for your résumé.
You become what you bring to the moment.

9. Becoming a beginner again is powerful.
Not knowing can be liberating.

10. Sometimes you have to burn something.
Not because the past was wrong because some versions of us have finished their job.

Prime Maturity isn’t about staying young. It’s realizing that 40, 50, 60+ can be a period of desire, creativity, experimentation and reinvention.

Talvez a vida não seja sobre nos tornarmos alguém.

Talvez seja sobre desaprender.

Tirar, camada por camada, tudo aquilo que o mundo colocou sobre nós.

As expectativas que não eram nossas.
Os medos que nos ensinaram.
Os papéis que aprendemos a representar.
As versões de nós mesmas que criamos para sermos aceitas.

Até que, um dia, a gente perceba que não precisa acrescentar mais nada.

Precisa apenas deixar ir.

Porque a nossa essência nunca deixou de existir.

Ela só estava soterrada por tudo aquilo que nos disseram que deveríamos ser.

No fim, talvez evoluir não seja se transformar em outra pessoa.

Seja ter a coragem de voltar a ser quem sempre fomos. ✨

A week before Burning Man, I decided I was going.

Within 24 hours, I had done the research, found a camp, applied, and committed.

Then came the madness.

Seven days to figure out flights, tickets, transportation, a tent, a bike, food, water, outfits, dust protection, lights, survival gear… and how the hell you prepare yourself for a week in the middle of the desert.

The answer: you don’t. 😂

I made a LOT of mistakes.

I brought things I didn’t need.
Forgot things I absolutely needed.
Took shortcuts that came back to bite me.
Got lost.
Got overwhelmed.
Got dusty.
Got very, very tired.

And somehow, somewhere between the dust, the music, the strangers, the sunrises, the mistakes and the complete surrender of control…

I had one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

Would I prepare differently next time? 100%.

Would I trade the mistakes for a perfectly planned first Burn?

Absolutely not.

Sometimes the best decision is the one you don’t give yourself enough time to overthink.
