“Plumb Line” open until October 17th!

Artists talk: Saturday October 17th 4-6pm

Medium Rare Project Space
68 Jay Street
Suite 619
DUMBO, Brooklyn NY

Artists @irit_baniel and @alexisgranwell
Curator @narellesissons

DM @irit_baniel to visit. Weekend hours 1-4pm and weekdays by appointment.

Alexis Granwell transforms paper pulp into a record of touch, holding the pressure of the body and the trace of a gesture. Her sculptures use color and texture to move between inner and outer experience, between sensation and meaning. The forms evoke anxiety, loss, and pleasure, while the tactile nature of paper creates a bodily encounter that invites introspection and connection. Granwell’s newest works also speak to the experience of illness and the fragility of the body. Her work resonates with Plumb Line through its attention to presence and repose, weight and suspension, and the ways the body negotiates vulnerability and balance. Touch becomes a way of attending to the body, its uncertainty, and its capacity to endure.

Irit Baniel’s practice encompasses a range of expressions from the highly intuitive 30-foot drawing/painting to a series of small object-like paintings that are part of her evolving semiotics library.  In addition, larger oil paintings on canvas are characterized by the interaction between structured and organic layers and by repetition versus singular motifs, creating complexity that invites the viewer to revisit and wonder.  The work in “Plumb Line”, focuses on events that took place within a specific timeline, including prolonged illness and the deaths of loved ones.  While Baniel’s forms of expression are diverse, they are held together by subject matter that echoes, like a mantra, offering a sense of axis or comfort. taken in DUMBO, Brooklyn by @irit_baniel

“Plumb Line” holds a tension between the vertical and horizontal, earth and sky, presence and repose. Baniel’s paintings move between the earthly and spiritual, while Granwell’s handmade paper sculptures explore repair and the possibility of transcendence. Their distinct practices come together through the relationship between scroll-like paintings and bodily sculptures, creating a visual axis within the space. This axis becomes a point of connection between the material and the spatial, where balance, gravity, alignment, and intimacy come into focus.
