Weekends at The Hummingbird
A Cinematic Prelude to Rodeo #11
Episode One: The Invitation

I wanted Weekends at The Hummingbird to feel less like a campaign and more like the memory of a perfect Southern California weekend.

I’ve always been drawn to the world Slim Aarons captured: grace, beauty, people dressing well, slowing down, and being completely at ease in beautiful places. So we brought together riders, actors, models and friends and let that world unfold at Hummingbird Nest Ranch. The Ranch Heiress upstairs. Friends arriving in vintage cars. Another couple dropping in by helicopter. Everyone slowly finding their way to one another.

Really, this film is a glimpse of how I want Rodeo #11 to feel on November 6th and 7th.

Yours,
Stefan

The first time Sarah Pierpont shot for IRON was in Solvang, with Monty Roberts. What stayed with us was not simply how beautiful the images were, but how little she seemed to impose on the world in front of her. Horses, rooms, faces and late California light were allowed to remain themselves.

Sarah studied cinematography at the American Film Institute, received a Panavision New Filmmaker Grant in 2022 and an ICG Emerging Cinematographer Award the following year. Her work moves easily between narrative film, television and commercial projects, from Adobe and Warner Music Group to Project Greenlight and The Big Brunch.

For Weekends at The Hummingbird, we asked her back.

This time the subject was a different kind of mythology: a grand California ranch, beautiful people arriving by car and helicopter, horses being tacked in the afternoon, drinks as the light disappears. Sarah shot it with the same restraint — less interested in making the West look cinematic than in noticing that, sometimes, it already is.

A selection of her frames from the film.

There are places that become more interesting the longer you look at them:

Hummingbird Nest Ranch was designed by architect Richard Robertson, drawing from California’s Spanish and Mediterranean architectural traditions — white stucco, terracotta roofs, heavy timber ceilings, tiled floors, ironwork, arches and courtyards opening constantly back toward the landscape.

But it’s the details that stay with you: light moving across the dark tile floors, painted ceilings, carved wood, old-world furniture, fountains and doors framing the Santa Susana Mountains beyond.

Nothing feels isolated from the landscape. Almost every room eventually leads you back outside.

For Rodeo #11, the Villa becomes the beginning of the journey through Hummingbird Nest Ranch.

Set across one of America’s most extraordinary private equestrian estates, IRON’s eleventh Rodeo will introduce Hummingbird Nest Ranch’s new chapter to Southern California’s equestrian, fashion, art and entertainment communities.

The land carries centuries of California history — once home to Chumash people and later part of Rancho Simi, the vast Spanish land grant established in 1795. In the modern era, the ranch became one of California’s most significant private equestrian properties, developed as a training ground for Olympic-level jumping horses and today spanning more than 126 acres of arenas, stables, vineyards, olive groves, lawns and Spanish Colonial architecture.

Our Rodeo guests will move from the Villa and Grand Prix field into a multi-arena equestrian program, through the historic Stables transformed into a Future West art and craft gallery, and finally to the Lake Lawn for food, music and conversation.

Rodeo #11 is the first cultural collaboration of Hummingbird Nest Ranch’s new era.

I spent an afternoon at Hummingbird Nest Ranch with cinematographer Sarah Pierpont and aerial cinematographer Rob Watt. By golden hour, somehow we had the whole place to ourselves.

Sarah disappeared into the Villa, following light through curtains and doorways, reflections across old tile floors, hand-painted details and rooms that seem to reveal themselves one after another. Rob was somewhere above us, flying his gigantic drone across the ranch and into the Santa Susana Mountains.

By the time the sun went down, we knew we had captured something that felt very different from a conventional location film:

This is Hummingbird Nest Ranch, IRON’s official Rodeo #11 location — through Sarah and Rob’s eyes. Reserve your Rodeo tickets via link in bio.

The West is still made by hand. For Rodeo #11, a 20,000 sq ft historic barn becomes the Future West Art Barn.

We’re now selecting the artists, artisans and craftspeople who will fill it.

IRON’s Rodeo #11 arrives at Hummingbird Nest Ranch on November 6–7.

Set across one of America’s most extraordinary private equestrian estates, IRON’s eleventh Rodeo edition will introduce Hummingbird Nest Ranch’s new chapter to Southern California’s equestrian, fashion, art and entertainment communities.

Guests will move from the Villa and Grand Prix field into a multi-arena equestrian program, then through the historic Stables transformed into a Future West fine art and craft gallery, before gathering around the Lake Lawn for food, music and conversation. Rodeo #11 is not simply another stop on the IRON calendar. It is the first cultural collaboration of Hummingbird Nest Ranch’s new era — and an opportunity for a select group of partners, artisans and brands to join us and help define what comes next.
