Historically, tournaments were held as a harvest ritual, in cattle camps, as an age initiation from boy to man, and to settle village rivalries.

The rule set is fairly simple. The traditional ruleset is to take your opponent down to the ground, or force them to place a knee or hand onto the ground. More urbanized tournaments allow for the knee/hand to touch the ground, allowing for a wider variety of shots, picks, and trips.

However, the winning objective for both styles is to take your opponent to the ground on his back, belly, or side.

The sport is clinch-heavy, and the starting positions reflect the balance and footwork needed to balance, defend, and attack from a variety of heavy collar tie positions.

The grapplers formerly competed in the nude, similar to many ancient grappling styles, but shorts have become commonplace. Athletes are often covered in wood ash or cow butter to dry sweat and avoid grips, as well as for spiritual protection.

The sport has survived and thrived despite widespread food insecurity, drought, and intense violence in neighboring Sudan.
