Last night’s game between Stanfield and Irrigon was everything you hope for when you walk into a packed gym. If you were there, you didn’t just watch basketball, you felt it. Momentum swinging back and forth. Big threes dropping. Tough plays in the paint. Two teams refusing to give an inch.

Late in the fourth quarter, Irrigon had possession. I was tracking the play through my camera when a pass between #3 and #10 went just slightly off. Stanfield capitalized. Steal. Fast break. Layup. Two more on the board.

Then came a moment that had nothing to do with the score.

The two players locked eyes. You could see it instantly, the frustration, the disappointment, that split second where blame can creep in. Every athlete knows that feeling. I watched that tension exist and then disappear in real time. Instead of pointing fingers, they pulled each other in. A quick embrace. A few words. We’re okay. We’ve got this.

And they did.

They responded. They kept playing. They pushed through the mistake and willed the game into overtime. No panic. No collapse. Just belief, emotion, and trust in each other.

They didn’t walk away with the win, but the way they fought to extend that game was something special to witness. Seeing young athletes feel that much, care that deeply, and still choose the team over the moment is what makes this game so powerful.

THIS IS WHY WE PLAY.

I LOVE MY JOB. 📸 taken in Irrigon, Oregon by @irrigonbasketball

Excited to announce Memo Ortiz as our new Irrigon Junior High Boys Basketball Head Coach!

Memo has been part of our Irrigon High School Boys Basketball staff since last season and will continue serving as a high school assistant while taking on this new role.

Memo brings a great basketball mind, works well with our kids, and has a passion for helping players learn and develop. We’re excited to have him leading our junior high program and helping build a strong foundation for the future of Irrigon basketball.

Building our program at every level is important, and we’re excited about the direction we’re heading!

Welcome aboard, Coach Ortiz! #juntos by @irrigonbasketball
