Such an incredible work. Follow these artists!! IRT Presents | Theatre 4the People‘s Courting Mayhem. This is not a play about basketball. Courting Mayhem begins at a basketball tournament that a highly acclaimed basketball recruiter, Big Earl Jensen, attends. Eager to secure their child’s future, the Hollingsworths—Trina and James, and the Rutherfords—Cam and Benny, meet with the stern, “no nonsense” Mr. Jensen, that delivers the news that only one of their sons would be recruited to the team. Both families, experiencing their own deferred dreams, inferiority complexes, greed, and yearn for stardom all at the face of being Black with limited opportunities, grasp at every straw to secure their future—even if they may have to abandon their morals, friendships, relationships and family values. by @irttheater

What are you up to June 19-22nd? Come see “Will You Be My Archnemesis? And Other Super Short Stories” It’s is a new play from up and coming writer and director Joseph Mann that follows a diverse group of superheroes as they deal with the “human” aspects of being “superhuman”. Through a collection of vignettes and short stories, we get a glimpse into the world of heroes and villains, after the day is saved and after the cameras are off. After an epic battle, a hero and a villain argue about exclusivity. A new vigilante struggles with his name on his first night out. A group of sidekicks question their purpose. As we move through these stories we begin to see past the fun and campy costumes and see through to the heart of these characters. Using multimedia elements and inspired by the stories and the visuals of comics from the 60’s and 70’s, Will You Be My Archnemesis? And Other Super Short Stories showcases superheroes in a way we’re not used to seeing them: vulnerable and on stage. PERFORMANCES: Thursday June 19th at 7:30PM Friday June 20th at 7:30PM Saturday June 21st at 2:00PM & 8:00PM Sunday June 22nd at 1:00PM RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes PRICE: $15.00 At IRT: 154 Christopher st. Throwback to our recent resident for the 3B Development program at IRT! IN RESIDENCE: March 11 – 24, 2025 Daniel Malefist desperately needs a job. During his interview a tragic workplace accident occurs, creating an open position. Daniel acquires work under the severe Cindy Parmesan. She is determined to turn him into the ideal middle manager, someone as eager to defer to those above as to dominate those below. As the pressure to submit joyfully intensifies, Daniel questions if he’s cut out for management or if his first shift will be the one that kills him. Turnover is about the constricted feeling that arises from watching the hours of your life go by from behind a cash register, cubicle wall, computer screen, the constricted feeling that comes from understanding that these unfulfilling hours are your life, that this is how you are spending your preciously short time on this planet. For fans of Severance and GG Allin. Written by: @sebhagelstein Directed by: @donotknowjack Cast: @livlennon1 , @lukepearlberg , @sebhagelstein by @irttheater
IN RESIDENCE: March 25 – April 14, 2025 How do you win when the deck is stacked against you? And in times like these, what was it your mother used to say? Does he really expect you to listen while he is going on about snails? Are you selfish? Performed in English and Spanish, Parsley is a snapshot of the same two people, C & X, across three distinct points in history; then, before, & ago. Each era is different – some have corsets while others boast modern amenities – but for C nothing much changes. Her mother is still dead. Her sisters, gone or run off. Her brother, away. Her overbearing ‘over-caffinated mall-cop’ type uncle, still imminent. And as always X is here, needing. Always he needs more of her than she wants to give; his baby, her house, the empire. X – Te amo realmente. Te amo realmente and I want a baby. ¿En qué momento esas dos cosas dejaron de ir de la mano?” Is that really too much to ask? He didn’t choose to be this either but now that we’re here, here we are. Where else is there to go? The space between the hope of expectation and the disappointment of reality creates a chasm between them which they try desperately to cross. As they navigate social constraints against their own ambitions, they exhaust the options of custom and end up wrecked and ruined. Well, she does. He’ll be fine. Written by Caitlin George & directed by Jonathan Taikina Taylor, Parsley is a dissection of the theatrical forms and stories we were taught was all of history. We dig through the graveyard of the fallen women towards forgotten knowns, greedy Generals, and our mothers’ fury. Working backwards we scrape off the plaque of canon to exhume what power is in a woman’s herb.
