A wee trip down memory lane!

It was great to stop by and see what the World’s Toughest Mudder was all about, and even better to bump into some familiar faces from the golden days of OCR in the UK.

It’s funny to think how desperate I was to take on this race 10 years ago, back when OCR was thriving and every event felt like a proper challenge. Looking back, I guess it was OCR that introduced me to the world of endurance and started that slippery slope towards longer and tougher adventures.

Who doesn’t miss those glory days? The Edinburgh Ultra Beast, helping with the obstacle takedown even though you definitely weren’t supposed to, racing all three events in a weekend before that was even a thing, and who could forget HH12 with its 300 burpees? Everyone was pushing the limits, doing crazy, slightly stupid stuff just to see what was possible.

It’s good to look back sometimes and remember where this journey started. It also reminds me that my endurance and running CV didn’t begin with ultras—it was built through years of muddy fields, obstacles, big laughs, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable weekends. by @irunthisway

A good day to be moving through the Highlands.

Taking on the iconic West Highland Way Race @whw_race was one hell of an experience. The volunteers were amazing, the support out on the course was incredible, and the camaraderie between runners made for a special day from start to finish.

A massive thank you to Craig and Lori for crewing me all the way to Fort William. Absolute superstar effort from both of you — I couldn’t have got it done without you.

95 miles. One crystal goblet.

So much attention is given to the Highlands of Scotland, with their breathtaking views and rugged mountains, that it’s easy to forget about the Southern Uplands.

Yet their rolling hills, green tracks, bleating lambs, and quiet solitude are beautiful in their own way. A softer landscape perhaps, but no less wild. Sometimes the best adventures are found where fewer people are looking.

WHW Recce Trip Report — Days 1–3

Got up to the West Highland Way for a few days of recce miles and to spend some proper time back on the trail before June. Easy to forget just how runnable and relaxed parts of the southern section can feel when the weather plays along. The first morning was cool, dry, and not yet heavy with humidity. Lots of people out walking the trail already and ended up running and chatting with Tommy for a while before finding a flat spot early evening, getting food on, and calling it there.

Day two felt like the real start of it. Long hours along Loch Lomond in warm, muggy air with that constant mix of runnable sections broken by slower, rougher trail through the woods. One of those days where the terrain never really lets you settle. Met a couple of other runners also racing in June which was nice — everyone carrying that same mix of excitement and quiet concern about what’s coming. Big day on tired legs by the end of it.

Day three finally brought cooler weather and easier moving trails north of Tyndrum. Things felt steady through the morning but by Bridge of Orchy the heel had started complaining enough to make the decision for me. Ended up calling it at Glencoe rather than pushing all the way north. No point forcing junk miles and turning a recce into an injury. Overall though, really happy with how the body moved over the three days. The bigger climbs felt controlled, recovery between efforts was decent, and carrying a lighter pack on race day should make a noticeable difference. by @irunthisway

Camino Portugués – Day 6: Valença to Spain to Train Station

Another misty, wet morning — waterproof on for a short trip into Spain, then back to the station and on to Porto.

A solid five days on the Camino Portugués — plenty of good food, laughs, and smiles along the way. Until next time.

Camino Portugués – Day 5: Caminha to Valença

Grey skies and a constant on-off with the waterproof this morning. Muddy trails underfoot, wind cutting across open lines, passing burnt-out cars and goats that look like they might take you on. Church doors closed and barred along the way. A short wander into Spain and back again to Portugal.

Camino Portugués – Day 3: Esposende to Viana do Castelo

Morning rolls out the door into a blasting northerly wind, heading north again. Through sleepy towns, winding into eucalyptus forests and onto rocky trails. Finally climbing up to the viewpoint at Santa Luzia Sanctuary, overlooking Viana do Castelo.

Early morning hustle through town, then back out to the coast with a light breeze rolling in. A quiet lunch stop in the shade of a church before the final push to Esposende.
