Every year I have the good fortune to spend a portion of my working day supporting the research and writing endeavours of some incredibly smart young people. On 𝗕𝗔 (𝗛𝗼𝗻𝘀) 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗺 & 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 at 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘀 we see a diverse range of essay and dissertation subjects, with a notable increase in the number of students addressing video games.

The latest 𝘚𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘘𝘜𝘌𝘚𝘛 article is dedicated to profiling and celebrating the work of two students whom I have had the honour to teach in 2026, featuring a sample of extracts from their recent texts.

1. In Fifi Chang’s (@jelly.fifish) final year dissertation 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘭𝘴: 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴, she applies theory from Alenda Y. Chang and Alexander Galloway to examine world generation and crop cultivation in Minecraft and Stardew Valley.

2. And in Angelo Sanchez Dela Cruz’s (@angelod3lacruz) second year essay 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢 𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘺: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘮𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘎𝘢𝘻𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘍𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘴 they ask whether player modification subverts the engine’s gendered coding or quietly extends it?

#fanedit of romeo and juliet x peony pavilion/牡丹亭 for byob!
shakespeare and tang xianzu/汤显祖 were monumental playwrights and literary giants of the western/eastern worlds in the same period — both died in 1616. i always think of these two stories as parallels, beyond the romance plot, the heroines are both young women who were confined by their patriarchal/aristocratic families. their catastrophic love affairs enabled a sense of defiance and idealism. by @is.this.ccc
