🌍 Cities at the Heart of Sustainable Development

On 12–13 October 2026, the UN Forum of Mayors takes place in Geneva, Switzerland.

The forum brings together city leaders to exchange experiences and explore approaches to sustainable urban development.

The discussions connect closely to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

From urban planning and public transport to climate resilience, local decisions play an important role in achieving global sustainability goals.

What makes a city more sustainable in your view?

Your neighbourhood is someone else’s habitat. 🪲🌿

The balcony flower? A feeding stop.
The tree outside? A nesting place.
The fallen leaves? Shelter for tiny creatures.

Look closer, there’s life sharing the city with us. 💚

October’s UN focus is SDG 15: Life on Land. Swipe through for a few ways to make room for nature, right where you live.

🌼 Grow native flowers suited to your space.
🌱 Avoid pesticides.
🍂 Leave a little garden corner wild.

What wildlife have you spotted near your home? Tell us below! 👇

What happens when opportunity meets purpose?

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Terence Kibula Lukong, a member of the first cohort of the ISA Program, who has completed his PhD in Engineering Sciences and Applications with the highest distinction at the National Advanced School of Engineering, Yaoundé.

Growing up in Cameroon, Terence developed a passion for understanding how science and innovation can address real challenges in society, particularly within the electricity sector.

His PhD research proposes a novel approach to electricity load forecasting, helping support more accurate planning of power grids, infrastructure expansion and regulatory decision-making.

For Terence, ISA became an important part of that journey.
“ISA was truly a turning point in my journey. It gave me the exposure, knowledge, and international collaboration opportunities I had long hoped for.”

And his message to the ISA community is one we want to remember:
“Never underestimate the power of opportunity. ISA opened doors for me that transformed a dreamfulfilmentity.”

This achievement is not only the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, but also the beginning of a greater responsibility: using science and engineering to contribute to the sustainable development of Cameroon, Africa and beyond.

Congratulations, Dr. Terence! 🎓👏
We are proud to have been part of your journey.

What if your next lesson began with a tree? 🌳🔍

A touch of bark.
A closer look at tree rings.
A leaf full of questions.

The forest gives us so much to explore and every question can open a new path to understanding.

For ISA, this connects to SDG 4: Quality Education. Education for a sustainable future begins with opportunities to explore, ask questions and understand the world we share. 🌍

What would you be curious to discover in the forest?

Every big project starts with a first conversation. 🌱

Last week, we visited Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Hamburg-Harburg for the first introduction to Wälder ohne Grenzen.

Together with the students, we talked about what the project is about, why forests matter, and what we will explore together in the coming weeks.

This was just the beginning. 🌳
This week, we’re taking the next step.

Follow along as Wälder ohne Grenzen comes to life.

From Hamburg to a PhD graduation in Japan 🎓

We’re very happy to celebrate Dr. Abel Abebe Ersulo, a former ISA Practical Research Fellow, who has successfully completed his PhD at Hokkaido University, Japan.

Dr. Abel spent nine months with us at the International Sustainability Academy in Hamburg. During that time, he worked on his research, developed his academic goals and prepared for the next step in his journey.

Years later, he wrote to us with a sentence that really stayed with us:
“ISA is part of this story.”
His PhD is, of course, the result of years of his own hard work, persistence and research. We’re simply proud that ISA could support one part of that journey.

Congratulations, Dr. Abel, and all the best for what comes next. 🌱

From participants who joined because of their children, to teachers who joined because of their students and students who rallied their coursemates to learn with them...

Access Equality Workshop 2026 had participants from different works of life.

We are delighted that every single person got value for their time.

Ps. These are only a few of the numerous heartwarming reviews we've received so far.

One idea can take you somewhere completely unexpected. 🌱

For Emily, a journey that began with tackling plastic waste in Vietnam has grown into something much bigger - entrepreneurship, ISA, international connections and now a PhD in Hamburg.

What connects all of it?

A curiosity about how we can build systems that are not only more sustainable, but also stronger and more resilient.
Her story is still evolving and this is just the next chapter.

Swipe to meet Emily and follow her journey. →

What if your classroom had no walls? 🌳👀

No desks.
No whiteboard.
Just forests, different cultures and perspectives from around the world. 🌍

That’s what Quality Education can look like.

Through Wälder ohne Grenzen (Forests Without Borders), young people in Hamburg explore forests not only from a local perspective, but also through experiences and knowledge from Brazil, Cameroon and Indonesia.

Together with SDW Hamburg and the ISA, learning goes beyond facts.

🌱 Learn from nature.
🌍 Learn from each other.
💡 Turn knowledge into ideas.
🤝 And ideas into action.

Because SDG 4: Quality Education isn’t only about where we learn. It’s about learning how to understand our world and how we can help shape its future.

👉 Swipe to discover how one forest can connect many perspectives.
