One light, one suit, one roll of film featuring @l.n.thomas. Everything here came from changing the pose, the chair and the crop, not the set.

Shot on film, black and white, in a single studio session.

Plot twist: this isn’t my usual content, and yes, I did actually make these product pages using Canva - because I get so many texts/DMs asking me the question of what the best compact camera is for travel/casual shooting! Of course, the elephant in the room is that none of these cameras are cheap, and that’s just the nature of buying photography equipment these days…

So here’s the carousel I keep promising to make instead of typing the same reply 47 times.

Fuji X100 series: Gorgeous to look at, a joy to shoot, and the fixed 35mm-equivalent lens makes you move your feet. Downside: everyone else wants one too, so good luck finding it in stock.

Ricoh GR III / IIIx: Fits in a jeans pocket, and the street photographers swear by it. Great image quality, but no viewfinder and not much zoom, so you commit to the 28mm (or 40mm on the IIIx) and own it.

Sony RX100 VII: Real zoom, fast autofocus, great video, and it still slips into a jacket pocket. Less soul than the other two, but it gets the shot in nearly any situation.

My honest take: the best compact is the one that’s actually in your bag, not stuck at home because it was too big!

Full disclosure, the Ricoh is the one I actually use. It’s my go-to companion for weekend trips, or any trip where photography can’t be the main event and I’d like to stay on good terms with whoever I’m travelling with. It’s small enough to forget it’s there, and good enough that I’m never disappointed when I get home.

As I put my jacket on this morning, I thought it best to share a few of my favourite frames from a September trip to Marseille/Arles for the photo festival before it becomes unacceptable to share summery photos…. taken in Marseille, France by @isaac.a.q

Same frames on film and digital.

There’s always someone online saying a photo is better because it’s on film. Or that film is dead and digital does it all. Both takes are tired.

A bad photo on film is still a bad photo. A good photo is good on whatever you shot it on. Grain doesn’t fix a boring frame.

I don’t love having my photo taken. I’m much happier behind the camera than in front of it. But put me in a photobooth and I’m forced to reckon with my own face.

That’s why I try to find one wherever I go. The photobooth might be the most honest corner of self-portraiture. no retouching or editing, just a strip of small, rushed moments. It’s also a lineage worth celebrating, from the Surrealists to Warhol to every teenager who ever crammed in with friends. A cheap, chemical, slightly chaotic way of saying this is who I was today.

Strip pictured above when I was in Arles for the photo festival. Not flattering, entirely me.

Feeling lucky. Having the home studio setup has been a total game changer. Working on test shoots, doing portrait sessions. Amazing what you can achieve pushing some furniture out of the way….this reel is meant to give someone the motivation to do the same!

September is Alopecia Awareness Month.

It feels like a good moment to share a few images from True Crowns, a project I’m still incredibly proud of. I photographed 48 people living with alopecia, giving each person space to share something of their experience alongside their portrait.

What started as a photographic project became something much more personal through the people I met and the stories they trusted me with. Seeing the work exhibited last year, and the response it received, was incredibly meaningful.

Alopecia affects people in so many different ways, and I hope True Crowns continues to contribute, in its own small way, to greater visibility and understanding.

Thank you to everyone who took part and trusted me with their stories. taken in London, United Kingdom by @isaac.a.q

Met these two from Sons of Kai in Rathcoole outside LFW. They stopped me and asked if I’d take their portrait. Always nice when a photograph finds you. taken in London, United Kingdom by @isaac.a.q
