POSTS STORIES REELS

If you’re looking for home, this one’s for you. I’ve found home in lots of places and asked lots of hard questions, and Jesus has held me and known me along the way. This song tells a vulnerable (and beautiful) piece of my story. It’s called Luggage. You can find it anywhere you listen to music.

What’s your story? Where are the places you’ve bumped along to in the back of a land cruiser?

PSA most things we love don’t last. Cars break. Health goes. That shirt you loved that cost way too much money at @anthropologie will get a hole in it. But Jesus Christ is the same in every season. Fearlessly loving us despite the kicking and screaming. His worth will never change—and neither will his outpour of love toward us as we wrestle with grief in a broken world. I always feel silly when I cry over little things. Don’t you? But he gathers our tears in his bottle, with the promise that he cares for even the sparrows and the grass and His white robes have nothing on @lululemon.

BUTTERFLY IS HERE!

God has done the impossible. He has made what was dead alive. He has breathed hope into sorrow. He has slain death with life. He is our joy. We are his new creatures.

His presence is what transforms us—and he is always present.

He is here when we’re glorying in the garden.
He is here when we feel tired and shipped around.
He is here when we come to the end of our perceived strength and can offer him only ourselves.
He is here when we go places and miss people.
He is here when we remember what it’s like to be five.
He is here when the people we love die and we can no longer reach them.
He is here when we’re dancing and laughing and cheering over his faithfulness.
He is here when we need a counselor and defender.
He is here when we finally stop struggling and look up.
He is here when we ache for a new Kingdom.

Friends, today I am remembering afresh that I am not called to be his perfect, self-dependent poster-child. We are called to being his little children—(the ones he calls beloved and beckons into his strong arms.)

We are fiercely beloved. He has sealed it in blood.

Go run in the garden today. Find a butterfly. Think about how insane it is that something could go into a dark place to be shaped and come out a radiant new creature. Let it speak to your weary soul of the Lord’s power and faithfulness as you call him, “Abba.”

When I was five mom and I started taking Suzuki piano lessons together. I used to run away crying because I couldn’t play it right in under three tries—but she sat with me on that bench and so I kept going. The three year old I nanny sometimes walks around the house saying, “Just me and my mom,” with satisfaction. Every time I hear her I think of this lady. My biggest cheerleader. One of the wisest and most joy-pursuing people I know. A lover of @thetemptations (this is the song she blasts in the car when I’m going through a heartbreak. I highly recommend it.) Adventurer and poet. Teacher and listener. My day one. There through thick and thin. It’s her birthday today. TELL MY MAMA HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🤍 by @isabellethommusic

hi I’m Izzie:) here’s some things I’m learning about the middle…

(of a big project, of becoming, of growing, of trying things out, of learning new things, of things that don’t make sense…)

I don’t have it figured out! but I’m learning to find thrilling beauty here where I don’t have control.

if you’re in the middle too, we can start a club.

save this for a day you need some reminders in crayon, or tell me what you’re learning lately! 🧡

We had a beautiful time writing songs for the church! 🤍🎶 The Lord was so gracious to give us songs rooted in His Word, and we pray that we’ll be able to share them with you all soon.

All glory to God for the gift of creativity and the privilege of writing songs from Scripture to serve and edify His church. He is so good, and He alone is worthy of all our praise! 🙌🏼

On Saturday I followed posters to a tiny church where @yangandolivia @sisyphusonviolin led a room of strangers into a deep relationship with Ravel, Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann through the lens of the mental health battle. It was breathtaking. These men ran—composed—for their lives. I was talking with @shawnokpebholo a couple of weeks ago about the odd overlap between deep suffering and mesmerizing melodies. I keep looking up to find I am not alone out here! Wasn’t it David who begged for death, and led his entire nation out in song? Wasn’t it Christ himself who endured the worst of human suffering and rose from the dead in a dew-covered garden?

I can’t stop thinking about the power of articulation. Ravel was a fanatic. He painstakingly placed instructions for every note. Controlling? Detail oriented? Articulate. Exercising agency. He took a deep well of joy and brokenness and spelled it out exactly as it was. On Saturday, I watched a room full of people find themselves in the midst of his carefully articulated story. And when the spark of hope sounded, we were strengthened because we knew what we’d come out of.

This is the work of artists. To articulate. To share. To ask questions. To help people see themselves and each other in the midst of The Story. by @isabellethommusic

in light of 🍁FALL🍁 here is an achey string quartet I wrote at midnight after a breakup and a week of pondering the phrase “bright sadness.” I told everyone it was about mushy fading leaves and cold air.

Today I followed the thrill in my bones to the library and remembered that I love to read. It’s a magical place, the Library. Everywhere you turn there is a wealth—and all of it is free. Come, buy without money and without price. I grew up hungry for real meat and was given a feast in McDonald and Lewis and Bradbury and Austen and whoever wrote Quo Vadis that I never can remember. But today I picked up dear Annie’s heart and mind and am sitting here full of awe and wonder over the precious gift I only happened upon. I’m laughing. by @isabellethommusic

new idea I’m fleshing out with @cfavela5 for our next @canvashouseworship songwriting sesh… redemption starts now! Not later. Pick up your shovel and start gardening by @isabellethommusic

Paul reminded me this morning that we’re supposed to be people with our eyes trained on heaven and hands working the dry soil on earth. I found a little piece of Kingdom in these wildflowers. Can’t imagine walking through streets of real gold. But imagining and gardening will get us through, won’t it?

As always, you can hear the whole song wherever you hear things. It’s called Kingdom. It’s my favorite right now.
