We got my first (print) story in National Geographic just as we got Time Magazine naming SpongeBob a global icon. What a time to be alive.

10.31.26 — “There’s a rat in all of us that feels maybe othered; maybe not cool; maybe ugly; maybe like you have to fight to survive... living in a system that wasn’t built for you,” the Rat Queen told The Ravenna Report. “And what are we all at the end of the day if not just rats, looking for a piece of pizza and a rat to share it with?”

“Imagine having a child dead in my womb for three days.”

Iris Monterroso-Lemus was around 18 weeks pregnant, detained at Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, when she noticed her baby's movements slowing. She spent days begging for medical care, she said, but guards only yelled at her or dismissed her pleas. On April 29, three days after the movement stopped, officials took her to a hospital, where she was shackled to the bed and delivered her stillborn son while ICE agents looked on. Her fiance, Gary Bivens, a U.S. citizen, learned of the loss when the hospital called to ask what he wanted to do with the remains. Bivens now sleeps next to his son's urn each night. On May 9, Monterroso-Lemus was deported to Guatemala, the same day she was scheduled for her first postpartum follow-up.

ICE documented at least 18 miscarriages between January and September of 2025, then stopped making the data public. Between Jan. 1, 2025, and Feb. 16, 2026, there were at least 498 bookings of pregnant, postpartum, and nursing immigrants; at least 363 were deported.

The United States moved executions behind closed doors generations ago. Now, Pete Hegseth wants Americans to watch one, reviving questions about the psychological and societal consequences of state-sanctioned killing.

Moments from my time hearing the stories and songs within Panama’s rainforests:

Flaco — whose grandmother is the Emberá tribe’s eldest — brought us to their village through the river.

Miguel, a village elder, leads musicians in an arrival song welcoming us to the Emberá community

The group’s women spend their days weaving, cooking and raising children. Since environmental protections now impact their ability to harvest local building materials, selling their creations is one of the ways they’re able to purchase leaves and wood necessary for infrastructure

Miguel carves a parrot-shaped walking stick from cocobolo wood while repairing part of a bed

The community is small, consisting of 75 people total with the youngest just one year old

Emberá women preparing our lunch — fish, served in large green leaves

A quiet conversation between two women

Two boys play with toys on the bamboo floor of one of the community’s buildings

When a child is four months old, their entire body is painted with liquid from the Jagua fruit in order to strengthen their skin, protect against insects and ward off evil spirits

Fronds from the Wada palm (“Palma Wada”) are the primary building material and must be transported from the Bayano region, costing the tribe a whopping $1.25 per leaf since environmental protections limit their ability to harvest local land
