for a long time as a lesbian filipina woman and nonbinary person (first time publicly saying that, wow) i was faced with a choice. the knowing feeling that i would always inevitably have to abandon a part of myself in order to fully accept the other, the places where i got those beliefs from as well as myself, were wrong.

the 2026 ms.philippines theme of “halaga” asked of me to look at every part of my identity and to carry it steadily and lovingly with both hands. it asked of me to abandon every notion of what i perceived to be “enough” of any identity and aim for authenticity at the core of every set i have put on that stage. above all else i walk away from this experience knowing i far succeeded at that. i carried a piece of hawai’i with me, i requested and proudly wore a “ms/mx fyi” sash across my chest, and represented an org of people i love while baring myself to my community. ultimately, i was met with the most open arms i could’ve asked for. to hear the crowd that night and know that what i have done has resonated with people, most importantly a younger version of isah, is more than enough for me. i had used the stars to guide me home, both to my people and to myself.

the precipice of my choice depicting the story of the moon goddess mayari remains: in the midst of darkness light remains, not shining on you but from you, every aspect of you. you never had to choose, you are both and you are everything. your identity is your light, allow yourself not only the opportunity to acknowledge its existence but the privilege to bask in it. you deserve the light too.

i am so beyond honored to represent us at Ms. Philippines this year. I have been with FYI for my entire college career, and now, in my last semester I am so excited to have the chance to give back to us in a way that’s as authentically Isah as possible.
