The Chronicles of Kuta Village, 2026

They called me all the way from Peckham to Kuta, Osun State, because my mum had violated a tradition by selling Cambrook Peanuts to Iya Bashira. They said she had seven days before she would leave us and join her ancestors, all because she decided to sell groundnuts.

You see, growing up in Kuta village, it was a tradition that we must never sell yam or groundnuts. Why? I never really knew, but they said our ancestors had requested that these traditions be followed and obeyed, with death as the consequence for disobedience.

Aside from that, these same ancestors had promised the women children and fertility. There was no story of a barren woman in my village. I remember my mum always telling me how she prayed for me one day and got pregnant the next.

Now that I’m here, I think it was just her cycle and my dad, who was hardly ever home, happening to be lucky that night.
But you see, ever since I escaped the village to become a doctor here in the UK, my mum has always visited me.

She has become so dismissive of the traditions she once held so dearly. One day, while on a call with her friends, she promised to bring them groundnuts so they could have a taste of the abroad life.

When she got back, her friends wanted more than the free pack she had brought, so she decided to collect a little penny for their greed.

When the Baale heard about this, he called the priest to visit our home and lay a curse on my mum. The next day, she came down with hay fever and swollen hands.

Now, I am on a plane back home to beg the whole village to forgive my mother and perform whatever rituals are necessary.

My name isn’t really important to this story.

Oga Barber, 2026.

Hey guys, let me gist you about the time I was doing an apprenticeship at barbershop because I couldn’t pass JAMB or A-levels. There was this girl I and my fellow apprentices had a crush on. Anytime she would catwalk to grind pepper for her mum, all we did was stare, hoping to be free one day and approach her.

But the thing was, my fellow apprentice had a bigger crush on her, and he had begged me to collect her number so he could talk to her, unknown to us that every time she walked past, our boss was also looking at her.

One day, while we were bored and talking in the shop, my boss started talking about this lady he really likes and had been seeing on our street. We hyped him up, saying he could get any kele in the area. He said that the next day, he would send one of us to get her number.

That morning, while she went to grind pepper for her mum as usual, my boss sent my friend to get her number for him. Oh my, the pain in his eyes! He ran across the street and collected her number with his face squeezed.

From that day until we did freedom, my boss always sent him on errands and asked him to deliver messages to this girl. The anguish he felt, the laments he would express on our way home!

Two years later, I’m married to this very girl, with four kids, living life in Downside Molete.
My name is Shina Abass, the current CEO of Abass Beauty Saloon.

Bestie, 2026.

Ha! Ha! Ha! It be the ones you love the most, I mean it be the ones you swear would never hurt you, it be the ones you carry to the shrine against your said mutual enemies, it be the ones you walk around naked with in the garden of Eden betraying you.

You see my name is Motolani, a 30 years old lady from Oyo State, who was meant to marry Jibola on the 30th of June 2013. But that wasn’t the plan oo apparently Jibola had other plans for me and my family.

You see I had this childhood bestfriend named Nifemi. She was everything I wished for and hoped for but I guess the Devil wears Prada.

You see for the past 10 years I have been seeing and talking with Jibola my bestie has also being talking with him. Recording all the chats I said in privacy to Jibola.

Many said I should have blamed the man, but he was in the room the day of the proposal and saw us cry and all he did was smoke a cigar

But you see my friend, I blame her for everything, there were I thought I was going insane about this relationship but she reassured me saying he was the best man she knows and loved the way “he treated me” I think she meant her

You see the day Jibola was meant to propose to me, he contracted my bestie for the decorations and all but then immediately she started giving me this weird vibe about how “all men are the same and can’t be trusted, they just stain your white”.

I kept telling her not to speak in Morse Code as I only understood plain speech or binary. But that day as soon as my man kenneled down to propose my bestie started crying and shouting. In less than 2 minutes she started confessing and rolling on the ground.

This was done infront my my family members, my aunty, mum, dad and younger siblings as I was the first and only daughter, who just got accepted as a junior accountant in the Top 4

All they did was apologise and cry as Jubril smoked his cigar, I guess he was more pissed his side chick ruined it for his main one.

My name is Oluchi Azubeke, a now Trans man currently navigating between Amaka and Chidera.

Baba Folarin, 2026

Nor be small scope Daddy Folarin wan use for Honorable Bankole oo! Early this morning while I was waiting at my junction for Daddy Folarin to pick me up, I saw his whole bus covered in a stickers and logos with “Vote Honorable Bankole for Ekiti Senate candidate”.

I almost screamed and ran away, thinking the man who paid my $70 had come to take it all back and demand at least $70k for a bail money but no no no it was Baba Folarin Korope.

Oh no that drive from Soka down to New Bodija was the longest ride of my life, This man broke down his get rich scheme and I was too stunned to speak.

He said he knows those other parties are playing circus, so now while everybody goes against the broom and have choosen the wheels to propel them. He has swore to carry the broom everywhere.

He said he borrowed money from LAPO and Esusu to make banners for his bus, his wife’s car and even wrist bands to be handed out to passengers and church members.

Know this while Baba Folarin does all these, his wife have been trying to restock her provision store, but she can’t cause either no customers or no capital nor profit to restock the shop.

His two kids are out of school because of ASUU strike but his story is “before things become perfect they first turn bad”. But for almost 60 years things have been terribly bad and getting worse.

He looked me and laughed while struggling to change gear without his bus falling apart. He said “don’t you know the people of Israel suffered for 40 years before reaching the promise land, the people of God ooo, not to talk of us here in Africa, it takes time”

No words left my mouth, just constant nodding and “hmmmm” coming from the top of my tongue. Anyways that’s not my business.

Cause Chief has paid for my trip to Turkey, just so me and friends can make videos telling our fellow baddies to support the Broom movement cause it’s our turn to shine.

My name is Allegedly Anonymous, a young man in Nigeria trying to gather enough and disappear to a remote island.

UP NEPA, 2026

You see, when I was born, they said NEPA had been on a five-month break, so there wasn’t any electricity unless your family had an “I better pass my neighbour.” Nobody dared mention solar power. I bet the whole neighbourhood couldn’t afford it back then.

I grew up thinking the primary sources of light, aside from the sun, were lanterns and candles. Then my first scar came from holding a lantern so my dad could teach me my homework.

I remember I was five years old, and there was still no electricity in my life. Electricity was a luxury to me. I had never seen a bulb light up or a fan spin. But on this day, my story changed. We decided to visit our Big Mummy in Lagos.

That was the first time I saw a bulb light up. For the very first time, I saw a ceiling fan spinning and acted as though I had witnessed a helicopter flying above me.

I was so stunned that I didn’t move for a good 30 minutes, watching the fans spin simultaneously without clashing into each other, providing more air circulation than the hand fans my parents used.

Since then, it has been my dream to move to Lagos, until I read an article on BBC about a lady complaining that the government had switched off the power without a week’s notice on a remote island in London.

Then I vowed to leave Nigeria without looking back. I’ve been in the UK for a decade now, with dual citizenship, while my nuclear family still struggles with four hours of electricity every two weeks. In my defence, I didn’t leave home to feed home. A home of 13 children, excluding my parents.

I remember this story because I am currently on vacation at a private resort, and they keep apologising for power outages. I didn’t even know the power was out. My name is Agidi Chibeke, a senior software engineer at Plantair.

Update, 2026.

Nor be small update oo. See ehn, my retirement plan don enter group chat! I repeat, my backup plan has being leaked. Back in 300 level, me and my friend agreed to explore life and its opportunities till we were 35, and if nothing popped, we would join the army or start a church.

You see, I was really for the latter. In fact, I wanted to start ASAP. Instead of exploring other mineral resources in my country, I wanted to open a church and sit on offerings and tithes. You know, teach my own doctrine, but my friend Chidi was against it.

He said we would be taking advantage of our people. As time went on as we explored, we sold a restaurant close to our college to a group of Chinese investors. We didn’t build or invest in the restaurant, we didn’t even have certificates of ownership.

We took that money and went to Lagos, acquired the finest things of life. I thought we had explored enough and we’d be settled, but we were only 24 years old.
By the time we were 30, we could barely pay rent. I sold all my properties and borrowed from friends to move to the USA and join the army.

While my friend Chidi decided to move back to Benin and open a church on Mission Road. He had employed all the gimmicks I had taught him, the miracles, the doctrines, and lifestyle needed for the task.

He never lost one bit, he has made more than we did together. I say this as I watch a TikTok of Chidi, thanking God for his 3rd private jet, while I hide in an enemy camp, praying I see tomorrow. Hallelujah, Amen.

And my name Amos Monday.

Ojurere, 2026

Today, we remember Ojurere. You see, when I was in Primary One, there was this girl called Ojurere. There was a rumour that she was cursed with a disease that made her miss almost half of every school term. Unknown to us, Ojurere was a sickle cell child.

You know the matter for Nigeria na. There was no proper healthcare. And for the poor, the standard of living was worse than those living on the streets of Hastings. I mean, the government provided them shelter, yet they chose to remain on pipes.

But here in Felele, Ibadan, nobody cared if a child had SS. The only time they cared was when saving or helping that child could bring them enough money.

Ojurere came from a family of five, three girls and their parents. She was the eldest daughter, which didn’t make things easy for her younger sisters. They were constantly bullied.

“I can even beat your weak big sister. You want to go and call her so she can faint?”
We never really played with Ojurere because we thought she was a witch, or perhaps a child of the marine kingdom. A small push and she would be on the ground, then she wouldn’t show up in class for the next five weeks.

We didn’t know she was sick. We just thought she was too feeble, or that she didn’t eat enough. The last time she missed school, her parents came to complain to the management. Their seven-year-old daughter was afraid of returning to school because all she experienced there was pure bullying.

The next few days, our principal and teachers taught us extensively about sickle cell. I remember all the girls crying throughout the day and writing touching letters to Ojurere. “I can’t wait to see you again. I’m so sorry. I want to be your friend for life. Please forgive me.”

The day she was supposed to return to school was beautiful. I remember asking my mother to pack extra lunch for Ojurere.
That morning, as we stood on the assembly ground, they told us she had died. She had fallen into a well and drowned.

My name is Chike Amanda. Today, I watched my daughter struggle in a hospital with sickle cell, lonely and alone.

Shaghala, 2026.

Sister Kemi had come back from overseas, or so we thought. We imagined she would return with bags full of goodies, but that wasn’t the case. She sat us down on her first night home and told us she wasn’t going back. She couldn’t do it again.

You see, my sister was one of the girls they called shagala. These were usually girls from poor homes taken to the Middle East to work as housemaids. The sad thing was that some of these girls spent almost fifteen years paying back the masters who sent them there, without having anything left for themselves.

You see, Alhaji Usman had promised my mum that he was very interested in Kemi because she was smart, and that he would send her to Egypt for college.

What we didn’t know was that he was sending my sister to work as a househelp for a family of fifteen, for $100 a month. She received only $50 after Alhaji Usman removed his charges and interest. She couldn’t go to school. She couldn’t take a break from work. Day in, day out, she worked to pay Oga Usman.

Any day she missed work, my mum would be harassed at her shop and at home. He constantly reminded my mum that was why his daughter had left, because she was cursed.

After ten years of endless struggle, Kemi finally finished paying her debt and returned home with nothing to show for it except a wasted youth.

My name is Adebayo Tosin. I’m going to Iraq next week, still sponsored by Alhaji Usman.
He told my mum this time would be different.

Yaba Left. 2026

Today, I remember when I was posted to a psychiatric hospital, AEFUTHA, as my primary place of assignment during my NYSC. It was in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Worst moments of my life.

An average individual in this country is insane, not to talk of those confined in a space with no resources, but Okpa, not even Moi-Moi.

You see, there was this couple. They called them Romeo and Juliet. Every day, they were fighting and trying to kill each other. Some days, one would pick up a knife, trying to slaughter the other for dinner.

Most days, armed officers were called in to show their powers on them, because only in this room, and with escorts, were they at the peak of their dominance.

But some days, Romeo would end up biting them or chasing them around. With the officers shouting, “Romeo! Romeo!” and me shouting, “He doesn’t bite!” only for all of us to end up being chased around the hospital.

I heard Romeo’s mum had gone to see Ohen, so she could lock Juliet down for him.
You see, Juliet was from a family of affluence and had met Romeo, a scholarship student, at the University of Oxford, where they both studied medicine.

But things started to backfire when Romeo’s mum suddenly died one morning, leaving no one in charge of the rituals Ohen had commanded.

You see, they decided to move back to Lagos during their final year, get married, and tell no one. Five years later, neighbours in the community had complained of constant noise and displays of insanity from the two of them.Nobody knows if it was the juju that backfired or if it was even drugs.

My name is Isoken Limpopo, a neuroscientist and graduate of UNN, who just stole Juliet’s wedding ring to sell on the black market so I could buy a new wig from Trisha on IG.
