LALO SMOKEY SAMUEL has joined our home. He is perfect and I love him. This is the first new cat I have welcomed into my life in almost 20 years. The greatest joy this time around is seeing Séamus respond to him with tremendous care and gentleness. The second greatest joy is when he sits on my lap and purrs by @isamuel

CHLOE McHUGH SAMUEL, b. 2005, d. May 30. 2025.

In this Easter season, I have come to a new appreciation for the story (told in all four gospels) in which Joseph of Arimathea takes Jesus’ body from the Cross, wraps it in clean linen, and carries it to his tomb. The heartbreak and sorrow of that moment must have been overwhelming.

There is something about carrying a dead body, especially of a friend, that is as real and as immediate as anything can ever be. It can feel in those moments that this reality, death, is the true reality, and that everything else is simply a momentary illusion. I wonder if that is how Joseph felt, carrying his dead friend.

As my beautiful cat, who was my friend, lay dying, I played for her many recordings of O Filii et Filiae:

“An angel clad in white they see, who sat and spoke unto the three, ‘Your Lord has gone to Galilee.’ Alleluia!”

Death is real. But there is something realer. by @isamuel

Happy birthday to @emily.hopple. I love you. Thanks for helping me figure out whether the socially normal thing was to put this on my story or like this. #StayCool #LoveYa #BigUps #Girlfriends #Happy #Smiles #Grins #Mirth #HarryPotter by @isamuel

Merry Christmas! Remember, Santa Claus (aka Sinterklaas, aka St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra) is an extremely real person; do not let the dumb & unrelated English character “Father Christmas” distract from this fact by @isamuel
