Me and my brother @jedimindcuts had the privilege to travel back to my hometown to open for Bay Area legends Casual and Pep Love which was amazing. But what made the trip extra special was the chance to see family and old friends. The people in the cities that raised me. The genesis of my activism and cultural work (that blossomed in the Bay Area) truly took root by my upbringing in MN. Something in the snow that pushes the people to fight the power. Just check the legacy of militant labor (general strikes), the American Indian Movement, the Hmong community organizing, the Gorge Floyd uprising, kicking out ice. The TCs don’t back down in a fight. In addition to doing some music, spending time with homies and family, we had to pay our respects to the martyrs George Floyd, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The energy of these spaces is palpable, it’s political but also very spiritual. We randomly went to get some pho and met Auntie Tracy the owner of @myhuongkitchen the Vietnamese restaurant that sheltered and fed hella ice protesters. Check them out if you’re hungry. This trip was very special, a convergence of many corners on which I stand. Thanks for bringing us out @kanserzachariah by @iselfdevine
I was chopping it up with my brother @abbeyrizzle talking bout the influence of the elder and visionary leadership of Ben Caldwell which prompted this post. Ben Caldwell was and has been a visionary leader. He has been so much to so many. I came in contact with him in 1986-87 through a group called Poetic Style who were also from my neighborhood of Athens Park. At the time he was operating I-Fresh which also became a movie I was involved in. He created a safe space for me dodging bullets, gangs, and police. This honor is beyond overdue and well deserved. I am a product of his guidance and am forever in service. I am because he is. @kaosnetworkz Ase This picture of me is a still from the movie I-Fresh. FOR THE PEOPLE! It is with great honor to share that Chaka Mkali aka @iselfdevine will be joining us as a featured DJ at Beat Excavation! A Bush Foundation fellowship recipient and Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice fellow, I Self Devine is an emcee, father, community organizer, curator, strategist, racial justice trainer, graffiti artist, producer, and muralist. He’s also a thoro record collector and music connoisseur —> @dogon.mega.temple! Chaka recently told us, “I’ve been going through my collection for a few weeks looking for solid grooves to share. Nothing too obscure or far out as of yet. I’ll save that for later. I’ll be playing all 45’s. Expect some dub, funk, soul, instrumentals and a few secret spices lightly sprinkled in the batter.” We can only imagine the set he has in store, so join us for the full experience! 📅 August 30th 📍 ZOMA House Additional Selections by: DJ Todda @djtodda Mr. Neighborhood @mischark TaliaKnight @taliaknight D.A. We want to take a moment to congratulate I Self Devine (Chaka Mkali) on being named a Pillsbury House & Theater McKnight 2026 Community-Engaged Artist Fellow along with our love, Junauda Petrus! We had the privilege of engaging with the arts genius aspect of Chaka last month during the Urgent Emergent Performance Art Series at Icehouse and this clip exemplifies the essence of his work and what is possible in this position! Congrats to both awardees! 🎥: @bairstories by @iselfdevine
Photo by Bruce Silcox. Chaka Mkali (aka I Self Devine) Chaka Mkali is a Minneapolis-based multidisciplinary artist, cultural strategist, and community organizer whose work lives at the intersection of Hip-Hop aesthetics, visual art, and Black radical imagination. For over two decades, Chaka has used creativity as a tool for cultural resistance, healing, and transformation. His practice spans painting, murals, music, writing, and curation—all grounded in a deep commitment to social justice and community empowerment. As Co-Executive Director of Hope Community, a nationally recognized community development organization, Chaka brings art and culture into dialogue with organizing and policy work. His curatorial work includes Rituals of Resilience, a groundbreaking exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art that uplifted Black, Brown, and Indigenous voices through an expansive vision of healing and creative practice. A prolific lyricist, Chaka has released multiple solo and collaborative albums, using music to reflect lived experience and amplify generational truths. His visual art has been featured in public murals, group exhibitions, and solo shows across the Twin Cities. Whether through large-scale collaborations or intimate storytelling, Chaka’s work embodies the power of creativity to shift culture, reclaim identity, and build liberatory futures. by @iselfdevine
