NYC: How do we understand the latest World Cup? This year’s edition is on track to be FIFA’s most well-attended—and lucrative—tournament yet. Primarily hosted by the United States, it’s also been plagued by controversy over the Trump administration’s travel restrictions, its threats to the Iranian national team and its interference in sporting matters. Meanwhile, exorbitant ticket prices and a new competition format have shifted the complexion of the tournament and are redefining what it means to be a fan today.

To make sense of all of this Golden Goal will moderate a discussion with journalists @rorysmith82, Simon Kuper, @ishaantharoor and Leander Schaelaeckens about this year’s tournament and what it augurs for the future of the sport in the U.S. and beyond.

TRUMP’S NEW WORLD ORDER
Throughout 2025, WorldView charted the shape of global politics in the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term, chronicling the emergence of a new geopolitical age — what we could call the post-liberal world. Here are some of those columns. https://s2.washingtonpost.com/camp-rw/?trackId=undefined&s=6954af07db12032e3cc1ee88&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=wp_todays_worldview&linknum=5&linktot=87 by @ishaantharoor

Whom she laughs with the most. Whom she cuddles the most. Whom she stares at most watchfully. Whom she dances with the most. Whom she debriefs with the most. Whom she conspires with the most. Whom she loves the most.

Grateful every day for @bhumikatharoor’s journey and excellence as a mother, and for the greatest gift of life and love I could ever imagine. by @ishaantharoor

Kahaani loves her doting, patient, wise mother most. She also points to pictures of monkeys in books and says “mummy.” Am grateful for every day with these two, and of course ever blessed by and thankful for @bhumikatharoor’s mother and mine. by @ishaantharoor

It’s late here in Davos and I’m far away from my birthday girl @bhumikatharoor. She’s the one with the biggest smile and brightest ideas, the cool looks and the uncontrollable laughs. Kahaani and I are lucky to have your mirth, your wisdom, your heart, your love. Here’s to the next 35! by @ishaantharoor

@bhumikatharoor and I spent the last week in Paris, five years since our wedding! She’s right — it’s been the best five years of my life, bettered I’m sure by the next five at her side. In a marriage of southern charm and northern wit, she brought it all. I’m just the lucky beneficiary. And so, too, our soon to be 1-year-old baby! by @ishaantharoor

Almost five years ago, @bhumikatharoor undertook a daunting project: A whole MBA program at Georgetown, all the while excelling at a full-time job and putting up with a full-time husband. There were long nights, lost weekends and many candles burnt on all ends. But she triumphed and we looked so forward to graduation ceremonies in 2020. Those were canceled by a pandemic. But last weekend, @georgetownuniversity gave her class a chance to wear their robes and receive their scrolls two years after the fact. Happily for us, it meant Kahaani — a post-MBA arrival — could walk with her mother.

Much love as always to @npaaaan for most of these photos and general brotherly excellence. by @ishaantharoor
