Punjabi Rapunzel - directed and edited by meWhen I was younger I always wished there was more people that looked like me on TV and media, especially princesses 👸🏽 . I loved Rapunzel because of her long hair (at the time I had long hair too as I grew up Sikh), but could never fully relate to her . So I thought I’d do it myself,I’ve always had this vision .Thanks to @sophia.greenn for taking these photos , @velvetasian on the hair and @emmmaryaan for the 35mm in the other postI was talking to people about my vision and people told me about the whole thing about how people thought they where going to cast a South Asian actress (Avantika ) for a new Rapunzel movie and the outrage . I thought this was a coincidence, as I didn’t even realise this was going on ,but it’s not really as Indian people are know for having long hair!I was overwhelmed and surprised with the responses I have received, thank you so much to everyone who did the Google forms ! I really appreciate it .The responses where very telling .There was so many stories that I read through , some very sad to be honest.With 95.5% of people feeling like there was a lack of South Asians in the media growing up and 80.3% of people wishing they were white or another ethnicity at one point of their life due to this reason .You are all beautiful and only up from here 💞💞 by @ishamang

Darshana- 18th July 2026Was such a pleasure to show my art-work @theexchangew9 .Such a beautiful community space , filled with love! So happy this body of work has finally shown in an exhibition after 2 years. Feeling grateful! 💐 Featuring - ‘Punjabi Rapunzel ’ 2024Image transfer on canvas 35mm film - @emmaryangrieve Digital - @sophia.greennHair - @velvetasian‘This body of work was created two years ago and remains incredibly close to my heart. Looking back, I see it as the foundation of my creative practice and the beginning of many of the themes I continue to explore today.Growing up, I wished there were more people who looked like me represented in television, film, and popular culture - especially princesses. Rapunzel was always my favourite because of her long hair, something I deeply related to as a Sikh child with long, uncut hair. In Sikhism, hair is kept long and cared for as an important part of one's identity, making that connection feel especially meaningful. Yet, despite this similarity, I could never fully see myself reflected in her story.Rather than waiting for that representation to exist, I decided to create it myself. This work was born from a vision I had carried with me for years.As part of the project, I invited people to share their experiences through a questionnaire. The responses were both overwhelming and deeply moving. Many stories revealed the lasting impact of growing up without meaningful South Asian representation in the media. Of those who responded, 95.5% felt there was a lack of South Asian representation during their childhood, and 80.3% said they had wished they were white or another ethnicity at some point because of this absence.This work is dedicated to everyone who longed to see themselves reflected. You are beautiful as you are, and representation matters.’ by @ishamang
