Mutual Aid & Occupation: Calexico’s Farmworker Encampment

How Grassroots Organizers Broke the Border in 2021

Link for interview and story map in our bios!

——
angel’s statement:

a few months ago, i began a passion of mine in which my thesis inspired me to do. in order to hold the archive true to its fullest, those within the community must be the voices that document the archive.

being from both mexicali & calexico, my heart sits in telling the stories of both sides of the border without each other. moments in time where the border is simply (un)done from its fortification purposes call out to me because people, despite the fortification of the US empire, and the entities of this world undo the border by simply living through it.

the farm worker encampment was one of those moments in time. beginning my passion of the archive there, i began to tell not just my story as a transfronterizx individual but my lineage that lived across border that called me to support this encampment while i was in high school.

i noticed people simply broke the border by supporting each other beyond just a regional geographic human space, and far beyond the constraints of the racial geographies of imperial and mexicali.

i got to tell that story with my friends Ismael & Joey, to fully highlight what that moment in time meant, and to fully capture it with the eyes of my borderlands community.

enjoy it! by @calexiconeedschange

03/24/26 – Creating Change Through Student-Led Activism in Rural Borderlands
Moderated by Dra. Vannessa Falcón Orta ( @dra.falcon )

“Thank you all! That was one of the best events I’ve ever seen.” – Dr. Efren Lopez ( @efrenmlopez )

Not only are Ismael Arvizu and Carlos Fitch ( @ismabrain & @cfitch7 ) a powerful presence, but the conversation they brought to the room was invigorating, empowering, and deeply inspiring. @calulitx

From what once was to what is now, the future of activism and leadership felt alive, boiling and brewing in Room N102.

Co-hosts @chicanxsinfronteras cracked the concrete while touring campus with our guests. Through shared space and dialogue, we explored the infrastructure of the future by grounding ourselves in the past and fully embracing the present. ( @scoobydoofanatic1 @lanip27 @culrysheep200s @youenjoymyself_ @elpocholero )

Spaces like this remind us that real change doesn’t just happen. It’s built, challenged, and carried forward by students who refuse to stay silent. The work continues, and so does the responsibility to uplift, organize, and create pathways for those coming next. by @calexiconeedschange

The movement that reshaped education was driven by student activism, rooted in broader struggles for civil rights, equality, and political change.

From the 1968 East L.A. Blowouts to today, student activism has pushed educational institutions toward greater equity and inclusion.

That courage lives on today, and continues to shape what education can become.

Join us for a powerful conversation on student-led activism in the rural borderlands.

Creating Change Through Student-Led Activism in the Rural Borderlands:

“Citizens of Calexico and to whomever it may concern, I invite you to participate in a protest held outside of City Hall on August 14, 2020. Times are hard in this day and age but as we’ve seen through these last few months, unity and compassion have filled people with hope for a better tomorrow. People have been fighting the oppressive and corrupt system all around our state, country, and world. The city of Calexico has appointed an individual that does not represent our morals or cares about our safety. Rosie Fernandez accumulated 4 DUI’s, she got away with a warning as a ‘not likely to reoffend’. She stayed in her position even after the people she served told her to leave. As a leader, she should have stepped down after the demands were made. It only shows how untouchable she thinks she is. So join us and let your voice be heard because change is needed and is needed now.”

Gordo, I wish I could have been there in your last moments on Earth. But your body just didn’t let you, you always fought for life. You beat cancer 3 fucking times, you were always so strong. Your smile shined brighter than your brother and sisters. You’re the only one that would accept cuddles for hours and gave kisses for days. Your smooth short white hair was my mom’s favorite since it didn’t shed so much. Your barks were of a bigger dog despite your small body. Your whines would convince me in seconds. Your eyes were so beautiful, we had so many staring contests. You helped us through so many dark times, times where the only think I could look forward to was going with you. I’m broken but I know that you’ve brought more smiles into this world than all these tears of mine. So thank you Gordo, for being the best. I love you ❤️ I’ll miss you

Just kidding that’s not real, this bitch is still going to be mean. Yes I’m that libtard that took a flipping off pic @trumptower My dogs are my strength. Don’t kys, cuz I know someone probably needed to read that. taken in Calexico, California by @calexiconeedschange
