That’s the pint of a carpenter!

To enjoy a proper gold standard pint of @guinness it’s enlightening to learn about the most common mishaps when pouring and serving. Many bars and pubs fail to pay attention to what are not mere details but issues that do have a big impact on taste, texture and enjoyment.

This series was created as a tongue in cheek birthday gift to my friend Guto who introduced me to @shitlondonguinness and took me to his fav spots which also became my fav spots.

Learning to be picky is a one way ticket, as once you see it… factors such as not thoroughly rinsed glasses, with slight soap residue leading to microbubbles layer on the glass wallks. Or using inadequate glasses that will impact on nose and mouth feel. Not being patient and overpouring too fast, or making it flat. These all affect on the joy if having a proper pint of Guinness.

When it comes to picking a bar or pub for masterfully poured Guinness, don’t choose poorly.

My personal favourites in London, not in any particular order:

@guineagrill delivers superb pints and food to match. The pies and the Welsh rarebit are particularly mindblowing. In Mayfair.

@audleypublichouse also in Mayfair is a stunning spot with impeccable pours (of course I had a few for, ehm, consistency check) and excellent food, from fried cockles with malt vinegar to prawns and scotch egg.

@thetoucansoho is a great, compact spot for having a couple masterfully poured Guinness while in Soho. A classic!

The Coach & Horses pub at Wellington St in Covent Garden has a very classic look, and the most pleasing temperature of all Guiness I had, slightly above the average. This allows the taste to shine a bit brighter for an edge on enjoyment.

I drew the BAO Marylebone building back in April 2023 commissioned by @bao_london and a few months later while visiting the city I’ve checked it out in real life, having a delightful lunch with Shing and Erchen.

The process of drawing buildings in isometric perspective trying to get all the proportions, colours and details right in a lower resolution means each pixel matters a lot. I always try to gather as many references as I can - given distance limitations, I usually try to do some desk research and go after satellite photos, street views, images people have shared at the spot, and of course: architecture office blueprints and renders whenever possible.

To me the most interesting aspect of pixel art is to achieve a final result that makes people (myself included) be amazed at how well the artwork captured the essence and the details of what is being depicted.

I draw everything by hand, with a mouse, zooming in and clicking, clicking, clicking - it’s just like a 2D painting, only using colour squares. I don’t do 3D modelling and sometimes I wish did, it would probably make things easier. But it is the process, the human perception that decides what and how to be represented is what makes the final result special.

That becomes even more relevant in the current context of IA becoming a quick and easy way for transforming words into images in seconds. It lacks soul, though. To me, architeture needs to have soul. Food needs to have soul. Otherwise it’s just… nutrients.

I see commercial creative production (and pretty much all cultural production) as splitting between two paths in the future, according to their purpose in different moments: convenience/efficiency and pleasure/sensory. One does not meet to nulify the other, they can coexist.

A person can listen to music being streamed through their smartphone while jogging, but also enjoy picking a vinyl album from their collection to play on their turntable back to back.

A shop can display a photo taken by someone who has channeled their life experience, emotions and technique into an image, or write a prompt that generates the same image.

The difference lies in the process and its perceived value. taken in Marylebone by @isometricpixelart

One of the two Japanese scenes done for the Amo-te Sando box, depicting places where you can find or have sandos. šŸ—»šŸš…

Travelling around Japan by train is just great and works smoothly, and part of it is - you guessed it - the food. Sandos sold in train stations are usually cut in thirds, to fit into a rectangular box, a common shape for ekiben (eki = train station; ben(to) = boxed meal). You can find triangular shaped sandos in train stations as well, like they are presented in konbini.

It is heartwarming to catch the shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka and spot Mount Fuji in all its snowy peak glory while munching on a tasty (and usually cold) katsu sando. Make sure you get the E seat for proper viewing (D seat if it’s a Green Car). taken in Mount Fuji ļ¼ˆåƌ士山ļ¼‰ by @isometricpixelart

Back in 2024 I developed some artwork for the Cannes Grand Prix winner @spotify campaign Spreadsheets by @fcbnewyork - a unique animation collectively made by several artists entirely built into an Excel spreadsheet - impacting media strategists all over the world.

In this back to basics approach the tale of a single cell is told, showing an evolution from ASCII art to full blown photorealism, and yes - all that inside Excel.

The scene assigned to me was a transition between a forest, the countryside and a city, with the viewer’s point of view moving forward. For that I developed a three layer set for each scenery, allowing for parallax effect.

As the programming needed contrast to translate artwork into characters for the ASCII art, each layer has only two unique contrasty shades of grey. The background layer was static to provide depth, here adapted to represent the mood of each scenery.

It was so special to have been part of this and to see how my artwork was integrated into the whole animation, which can be found on YouTube by searching for Spotify Spreadbeets.

A big thanks to @danielfbmaia from @videocolossal & @theyouth_company for bringing me into this amazing project! by @isometricpixelart

The classic São Paulo state shaped pavement tile, ā€œPiso Paulistaā€, was created in 1966 by architect Mirthes dos Santos Pinto (Bernardes being a stage name) for a government contest held to decide a pattern to be the default for public pavements in the state.

Considering her own work too simple and still on her first steps as an architect, she was encouraged to submit her entey and surprised to learn that it was one of the four finalist picks. These were then produced and installed onto a section of Av. Consolação for public viewing - other finalist entries were one with a coffee bean (very connected to the state History) and another with walking feet.

Sadly, despite being the contest winner she was never credited nor compensated financially (not a cent) for her creation, despite extensive use of the design around São Paulo, giving up legal attempts to achieve a compensation due to the high cost of that process.

These tiles have been gradually fading away from pavements, being replaced by boring plain concrete or replaced/fixed without any care by repair workers.

A sad classic of the lack of care when replacing the tiles is not positioning them properly or not using the proper item, leading to an annoying spoiling of the pattern. taken in SĆ£o Paulo, Brazil by @isometricpixelart

Artwork developed for the Brazilian electronics and home appliances giant @fastshop rebranding of their customer services embracing the omotenashi phylosophy that was already present in the company, whose owners have Japanese heritage, into Fast Shop Cuida. Cuida means cares, in the active sense of being present, handling needs and nestling.

The service assigned to me as a theme was insurance, so I’ve depicted an entire customer journey, from purchase at a shop inside a mall to using the products outside with no worries, and showing the ease and speed of providing a replacement item - referencing Pulp Fiction’s suitcase.

Here is a bit of the artwork development process, from the white board marker draft to the final result, covering some steps in between. Everything was drawn from scratch and it was the first time I represented a proper Brazilian street scene with São Paulo’s characteristic look for buses, signs, electricity poles and such. The houses and buildings took inspiration from real life ones to keep a faithful look.

An interesting point is that originally the house with a bar was thought as being yellow, but at a point I realised it reminded me of the shape of a toriĢ„ (ā›©ļø) so I made it red instead.

A project orchestrated by @schoolss99 and @camilagondo who brought together a team of artists to capture the essence of each of the offered services, from tech assistance to product installation, from insurance coverage to putting together an intelligent home, me and this very special team interpreted each service into an artwork, to be used in both digital and print assets of Fast Shop Cuida.

The rebranding was announced at an event at a special venue, @aizomerestaurante at the São Paulo @japanhousesp - not only it is a restaurant and a cultural space I personally adore but also it reiforced the Japanese heritage and mindset of the brand founders and its leadership.

Some physical elements that were linked to the artwork development were there: my plush Milou that connects to the idea of having the bunny mascot around the artwork, and the actual draft I did with a marker before doing it in pixels.

To match each service, a food item was also thought and displayed - that was in fact the evening menu, by chef @telmashiraishi ā€˜s Aizome, and it was all quite delicious!

It is very rewarding to see brands invest in artists and people in general, two of the reasons that made the project very special to me. The content capture of artists explaining their processes and artwork concept was a lovely touch, even though I’m more reserved. At the event we also got to talk about our artwork with guests and journalists.

Very thankful to be part of this! taken in Japan House SĆ£o Paulo by @isometricpixelart

Year of the Dragon items for @bao_london šŸ§§šŸ‰

Between red envelope prizes, BAOverse app rewards and Dover Street Market BAO & Friends pop-up goods, some pretty amazing items that were both challenging and rewarding to illustrate.

Several fantastic collabs there: the @simonerocha_ Mini Egg Clutch; the @deathmaskmerchandise black BAO clogs; the @shushu__tong knitted red beanie; the @alldaygoods jade piled BAO handle craft knife; the black long sleeve @carharttwip_uk t-shirt; the @houseofbaby.studio dragon tattoo man rug and the @beams_official towel. Wow :)

Shapes, textures and details were overall very challenging, and it was quite amazing to see the artwork coming to life.

Happy year of the dragon to all! 🧧🐲
