@jonasharper_ is a DAWG šŸ”„

Free Agent Jonas Harper is a certified SCORER and LOCKDOWN DEFENDER. The Connecticut native joined the @terriermbball basketball program as a freshman walk-on in 2018 and earned a starting position & FULL scholarship by his sophomore year. Harper competed in 149 games for the Terriers, becoming a 3x All Patriot League All-Defensive honoree and a 1000+ point scorer for the university en route to a prolific college career, knocking down clutch shots as he became a franchise staple & All-Time Shooter for BU.

In his first year overseas, Harper took the NBL1 East (@nbl1east) by STORM, averaging over 20 points per game for the entire season and winning Defensive Player of the Year as a ROOKIE while leading the league in steals and his own club in offensive proficiency. As a professional, Harper's extremely high basketball IQ allows him to run a highly potent offense and both slow down the game offensively if his squad needs a good shot as well as speed up the game with back-to-back three's, a steal in the backcourt and a transition lay up. Harper will LOCK DOWN the other teams best guard while causing havoc on defense creating various steals and deflections for fast-break opportunities.

After his early professional success, Jonas ran into difficulty with representation which landed him most recently in German Regionalliga where he averaged nearly 30 (!!!) points per game on 48.4% Fg and 42.6% 3PT with close to three steals per game, including multiple 40-point outings in which he shot 75% 2FG and 54.1% 3FG (13-24 from three) across said outings.

Carmelo Anthony’s jab step and scoring without dribbles is due to his exceptional blend of footwork, physicality, and instincts. On this play, he quickly jab-stepped his defender to create space and shot-faked to get the defender to jump out of his shoes. Once the defender landed, he jab-stepped again towards the baseline and immediately rose up for the smooth jumper when he noticed that the defender was off balance. His combination of quick and deceptive movements allowed Melo to get separation, all without dribbling the basketball.

Once again, less is more in certain isolation settings.

What more can I say about Shai? Even in preseason, he looks like he’s in midseason form. Everything about this play was so sharp, from the balance and body control to the different counters to get the defender off balance. This is what paying attention to detail and mastering scoring looks like. Being able to have a counter for whatever the defense puts in front of you, and also having the patience and footwork to execute these moves in real time. A true sight to study!

Shai has TOO many counters. If I was the defender, I would HATE guarding him lol. If I stay down, he’s going to shoot the middy. If I anticipate the shot, he has different counters to get his shot off. All you really can do is make it tough for him and tip your hat if he hits a tough look.

Being Simple is an Underappreciated SKILL!!

Anthony Edwards didn’t need a ton of dribbles to get his shot off. Just reading and reacting out of the mid post verse the physical defender.

This really isn’t fair how skilled a player Bones is. A between-the-legs into the high pickup over the defender’s reaching hands in the gap, then he glides around the rotating help defender and finishes on the opposite side of the hoop with an inside-hand reverse layup. This play was DIFFERENT!!!

This is what poetry in motion looks like!

You don’t need to overcomplicate the game. You have to be able to score with a limited amount of dribbles in a tight area of space. Take a page from Austin Rivers’ game. It took one strong attacking dribble to create space for his jumper. All he had to do was approach the defender on the left side of the court behind the 3-point line, and as he saw the defender on his heels, giving him space, he stayed low to the ground, did a hard left-to-right between the legs, then pushed back hard off his right foot to get back behind the line. Also, notice how he quickly pulls the ball back to his body on the gather and flows right into his shot. An extremely simple move, but difficult to consistently hit in real games!

This is still one of my favorite and funniest plays to watch by Kawhi Leonard. Just peep his face while backing down the defender.
