6B. Checking if I still know how to climb. Better than my ability to tighten my pants. Weight loss is happening after all. 👀

The year was 2024.

Paty had not yet entered the volleyball cult
and was still able to enjoy the outdoors with her friends,
doing all kinds of different activities.

Can you imagine that?
Her — not playing volleyball,
but kayaking instead?

Thankfully, her non-volleyball friends didn’t give up on her. 💛

6B? The importance of reading routes beforehand. Have I mentioned that before? 😂

6A+. After flashing a bunch of 6Bs I decided to underestimate this 6A+. Check my struggles with your own eyes. Another example about how reading the route before hand makes a difference. 😅

6B+. A classic example of failing because of not taking it that serious 😅. I “forgot” to read the route beforehand and complete ignored the feet placement for the last part (I had a place for my foot so I didn’t need to hang for my life). Next time!

6B (Almost Flash). This one was a fun beast, I saw that it was my style and I was pretty much seeing that I could flash it. I failed! The heel hook used to hold my rotation failed, and I felt that I wasn’t conscious on hamstring activation (leg curls in the gym). For the next attempt I pushed hard and was able to do it! Very nice feeling, I felt strong during all the route 💪.

6c (v5). Trying a very hard boulder (for my standards), but I was very close to completing it. I had a nice session in Utrecht where me and other fellow climbers were discussing how to tackle the last part of the problem. Good for my ego: I was the old guy trying to advise the younger generation on how to properly get the moves go further. 🥹😂

In September 2024, at this same month I joined one of my biggest adventures: climbing in the Yosemite Park together with my mentor @a_salamandra! Not only that but I also end up in an unexpected high risk late night return from the Half Dome. Add to that countless battery issues with the rental car and even a midnight police encounter just like US movies that you wouldn’t want to be part of (but everything went well and the officer was very helpful after knowing that I wasn’t the bad guy).

In the end, everything went well, I met some very nice people and now I have a great collection of long lasting memories.

Almost time to come back for the round 2.

6B+ (Flash). Figuring it out on the fly was quite fun. A mix of mindgames and balance route with very little strength needed. It seems indeed that my average skill level increased because now I can flash 6Bs quite often now. 😅

6B (Flash). The fear of topping out (climbing over the end instead jumping down), makes everything much harder. The feeling of bashing your face in the wall during the last movement is always there. 😅

6B (Flash). Do you remember? 🎵 Memory is also part of the sport, knowing beforehand your movements like a karate kata makes major importance in the execution. Route reading is something that competitive climbers need to learn. Here, I did the route once again for recording and I was totally lost trying to remember the moves midway through. Energy waste!

6B+ Comp Style (Flash). I think this a milestone in my recovery, being able to flash a very intense boulder as the last one in a 3 hours session was great. Now it’s about managing recovery period and get ready for the next round. This was done in the Nijmegen Grip gym which personally I think it’s quite hard!

PS: This OST from My Hero academia is my go to music to breaking PRs in the gym. 😅
