I spent almost an hour trying to learn Pent-Up House by Chet Baker and I still couldn’t even get through a full minute of it. It’s not a beginner tune, but it’s also not some crazy high-level jazz piece. It’s common progressions and a lot of arpeggios. The truth is, over the last few years of playing in church, I’ve mostly just practiced what I needed to get by. Most of us work full time, have responsibilities, families, etc., so we’re not always putting in multiple hours of practice every day.

But the reason I couldn’t even get the first minute clean today isn’t because I don’t practice 4 hours a day like I used to when I was younger. It’s because I haven’t kept a consistent routine with progressive overload and the basics. I knew the chords. I knew what the sax was playing. But my hands just couldn’t connect everything cleanly.

Fifteen minutes a day of arpeggios, inversions, scales, metronome work through the circle of fifths would go a long way. Skipping the fundamentals always shows up in your playing. They’re the foundation of everything. Just a reminder to myself and any other musicians out there.

I’m sure by next week I’ll at least have the first minute down 🤣 by @israelmsc
