Our second child is due in February.
So I sat down and wrote out what I've learned parenting our first.

I got to four. The fifth took longer to see and it's the hardest one.

Presence. Not every hour. But when I'm with our kids, I focus on being fully there. Attention and affection, both.

Protection. When they're unsure or scared, they look at me. In that moment I act on their behalf. The lesson comes later.

Provision. A good education first. Then health, and room to just be kids.

Purpose. Showing them what it looks like to pursue something hard, and why it's worth it.

Four good things. Mostly warmth.

What was missing was the other half. Standards. Correction. The debrief after the hard moment, so they know what to do when I'm not in the room.

I'm calling it Pruning.

A vinedresser doesn't cut back a branch because it's failing. He cuts it back so it bears more fruit.

Warmth without expectation raises kids who feel loved and never learn to stretch.
Expectation without warmth raises kids who perform seeking love.

Most of us have a default half.
Worth knowing which one is yours. by @isramoreira

Our little pumpkin is 11 months! (Well… she turned 11 months back on Sept 27th but she’s keeping us so busy we forgot to take this picture!) She’s got personality forming like you wouldn’t believe. Eating portions bigger than her Mama at some meals. Loving ALL the food but a special soft spot for bread. Lots of bread. She’s also starting to say some new words trying out her “t’s” with “trees” and “toes”. Plus, this month she started pointing to body parts! So far we can identify our fingers, nose, eyes, and mouth!

Ontem o céu recebeu uma estrela brilhante, meu querido e amado avô. Um exemplo virtuoso de fé e trabalho, meu avô foi não somente um ajudante incansável dos meus pais na árdua tarefa de criarem seus filhos, mas também uma fonte inesgotável de paciência que sempre manteve a calma quando as crianças - eu incluso - faziam intermináveis badernas. Uma rocha forte para a criação e o fortalecimento de sua própria família, e um exemplo de fé inabalável, meu avô foi parte integrante e essencial dos meus anos formativos e seu exemplo permanece vivo em minha consciência e atitude.
