Film School will be participating in Night Out In the Parks with the Chicago Parks District! We will be screening three silent films, inspired by the absence of sound and rich visual compositions of film works by Black artists from the early 1900s. This performance series invites native Chicagoan poets and sound makers to fill in the gaps. Joining us for these fillings are Norman Long, whose work centers on walking, listening, improvising, performing, teaching, field recording, and exploring memory, place, ecology, and race; Xris Espinosa, who uses art as a language of space and encoded archetypes to explore the subconscious and determination of alter-destiny; and Imani Elizabeth Jackson, a poet working across disciplines, with particular attention to Black ecologies, histories, and intertextual practices.

Come through, bring a blanket or lounge chair or be free and stretch out on the grass. Be prepared to dance to the many sounds of Chicago before and after the screening to a set by ADOTJDOT featuring other vintage and contemporary Chicago imagery. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @israrene

screaming—wailing—hollering—whooping—grunting—murmuring—howling—cooing—crooning—whining—

•sonic interruption turned sonic appendage turned aphonic fodder•

i went back and forth and forth and forth and back of how to give words to something that is speechless, horridly and beautifully so. i’ve learned so much about gesturing, about whispering, about non verbal senses of communication from my grandma, her name was Lila but we all call her Lollipop. i soften so much to the sonics of Linda Sharrock because i hear so much of my grandma’s voice in the absences of her vocality. here is a piece •link in bio• that i wrote about the architectures of whispering and the dialects of absence ~ as always, let me know what you think or simply, listen to the halting ballads of Linda Sharrock today

Thank you @public_parking and all who took a moment helping me knead this piece into what it is. And most importantly, thank you Lila and Linda for teaching me ways of being ~

“what if i give you all day?” these days i’ve been taking it slow. arriving back to myself with every countertop i wipe down and every sheet that i fold. i’ve been taking a little longer to get out of bed, reveling in my morning tea, hand washing every dish, sweeping the corners of the sunroom… everyday, praying to my grandmother and great aunts and praying over my cat. all of these everyday somewhat benign rituals fortify my tether to this place be it in a physical way or in an emotional way. they have loosely become a ceremony of stillness, an animistic language, a way for me to remain ~ ive been reading this piece from alexis pauline gumbs about the god of/in everyday and i’ve been floored each time. just wanted to share here.. and always inviting your thoughts and feelings

(1) excerpt from “the god of everyday”
(2) excerpt from “the god of everyday”
(3) a poem by alexis pauline gumbs entitled “awusi” for the god of saturday within an Akan concept of god
(4) the first paragraph of alice walkers “everyday use”
(5) lyrics from a song by johnnie frierson “have you been good to yourself” spotify chopped the lyrics — the correct flow is “have you been good to yourself / have you been getting your proper rest / have you been sleepin at least 8 hours / …….” the essence is still there though taken in Everyday Angel by @israrene
