The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) extends its warmest congratulations to Navi Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize!

From challenging apartheid in South Africa to shaping international justice on the world stage, Pillay has dedicated her career to defending human rights and advancing the rule of law.

Her journey began in Durban, South Africa, where she established her own law firm in 1967 and defended anti-apartheid activists. She later served as a judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, helping establish landmark legal precedents on sexual violence as a crime under international law.

Her commitment to justice continued through her work at the International Criminal Court, as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and as a judge at the International Court of Justice.

In 2016, Erasmus University Rotterdam awarded Pillay an honorary doctorate, presented by honorary promotors ISS Professor Karin Arts and Professor Kristin Henrard, in recognition of her contributions to human rights and international justice. During her visit, she also shared her knowledge and experience with Erasmus University and ISS students in a masterclass on human rights and law.

Throughout her remarkable career, Pillay has demonstrated the courage and integrity required to uphold international justice, even in the face of adversity.

🔊 EPISODE 6 OUT NOW!

Join us for the final episode of the second season of 'The Good Humanitarian' as we explore 'The Cost of Doing Good'.

What happens when a humanitarian organisation does not simply respond to a crisis, but becomes embedded in everyday life? And what does it mean when that organisation is politically targeted, defunded and presented as replaceable? This episode looks at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the consequences of attempts to actively dismantle it in Palestine.

💬 Guest Roland Friedrich, Director of UNRWA in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem joins us for the sixth and final episode: 'The humanitarians that run a country'. Roland will talk us through the cost of Palestine - the cost of doing good when responsibility is endlessly postponed.

We would also like to know from you, our listeners: What makes a 'good' humanitarian? Leave a comment below or on our podcasting channels. ✍

Co-hosts: Thomas Ansell and Sarah Njoroge
Production: Saleem Salameh and Gabriela Anderson

🧩 What made the AI boom possible?

Generative AI can feel like it arrived almost overnight. But look beneath the technology and a much longer story begins to emerge.

The finale of The Ontology Lab Spinoza Series, hosted by the Crisis, Politics and Law Academic Team, is live!

In this episode, Karim Knio is joined by PhD researcher Andrew Dryhurst to trace that story from the rise of the World Wide Web in the 1990s and the development of graphics processing units, through the era of big data, to today’s generative AI boom and the growing concentration of digital infrastructure.

Along the way, they explore a striking paradox: how did dreams of a freer, more decentralized internet become entangled with some of the most concentrated technological infrastructures in the world?

Take out your headphones. For the final time this series, we’re making room for complexity!

🔊 Episode #5 is OUT NOW!

Join us for the next episode of 'The Good Humanitarian' podcast in collaboration with The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre!

You’ve probably heard of the Geneva Conventions: laws meant to govern war, protect civilians and shield doctors, journalists and aid workers. These and other laws are also meant to make sure that when the worst crimes happen, someone is held responsible. But what happens when those laws are ignored, delayed or applied selectively?

In this episode, guests Thandiwe Matthews, PhD (University of the Witwatersrand) and Gabrielė Chlevickaitė (T.M.C. Asser Instituut) join us for the fifth episode: 'The International Criminal Court is waiting for you'. The guests and co-hosts guide us through the debate on the cost of doing nothing.

We would also like to know from you, our listeners: What makes a 'good' humanitarian? Leave a comment below or on our podcasting channels.

Co-hosts: Thomas Ansell and Sarah Njoroge

🧩 What makes resistance endure?

Some social movements flare up and disappear. Others survive for years, or even decades, changing shape as the world around them changes. So what keeps people resisting?

Join us again in The Ontology Lab, a new podcast hosted by the Crisis, Politics and Law Academic Team at ISS. On the International Day of Democracy, we’re thinking about democracy beyond the ballot box and about the people who keep organizing, resisting and pushing for change.

In Episode 3, ISS Associate Professor Karim Knio is joined by PhD researcher Margaux Schulz to explore one of France’s longest-running social movements: the struggle around Notre-Dame-des-Landes and the Zone to Defend (ZAD).

Beginning in the 1970s with opposition to plans for a new airport, the movement grew, transformed and persisted. Even when the airport project was abandoned in 2018, the movement did not simply disappear. Why?

From occupation as a form of resistance to the ways tactics and struggles travel across movements, Karim and Margaux turn to Spinoza and critical realism to ask what enables collective resistance not simply to survive but to persevere.

Get your headphones – we’re making room for complexity.
