POSTS STORIES REELS

Advanced copies of my book Oblique Experiments: Claude Parent’s Architectural Installations (1969-1975) are finally here! I’m super excited to share all this work with everyone. Beautifully designed by @lbulman and published by AR+D. Available for pre-order and ready for delivery later this fall. If you order on bookshop.org, proceeds will go to a local bookstore—always a good idea—with the link in my bio. Many thanks to all of you who have already placed your orders. Stay tuned for upcoming book talks, and feel free to DM me if you are interested in my lecture on Parent and experimental architecture. Here’s the first full preview! by @isssstudio

NEW EDITION: OBLIQUE EXPERIMENTS PRINTS

The core of my book Oblique Experiments is the reconstruction of nine of Claude Parent’s installation designs using archival materials and fieldwork. I used existing drawings, photographs, and models as reference, traveled to all the sites throughout France, and even measured by hand many of the buildings within which these temporary installations took or were supposed to take place.

The result is a series of nine drawings appear throughout the book that are now also available on their own as high-quality archival 10”x15” prints in a limited edition of 20, signed and numbered.

Digitally printed by the amazing master printers at Hare & Hound Press in San Antonio on Hahnemuhle photo rag 308gsm paper—they are so velvety and have a beautiful pink glow.

Images 1 through 9, titled according to the location of each installation: Le Havre, Venice, Nevers, Amiens, Mâcon, Douai, Chalon-sur-Saône, Praticable no.7, and Caen.

Available in a set of nine, or as individual prints. Please DM me for more information and stay tuned for more details on where you can see a full set exhibited in the near future.

Claude and I in Melbourne, and so much more! What a wonderful time at RMIT with colleagues, new and old. My talk “Contingent Communities” was not only a take on my recent book in relation to my creative practice, but also a way of thinking about the connections we make both in life and through work. Thank you for the invitation, for hosting, for the rich discussions, and the promise of more exchanges and collaboration to come @suzie_attiwill @interiordesign.rmit @making_distance. Also thanks to Tania Ursomarzo for the new friendship and some of these photos. @seangodsellarchitects’s beautiful building has some lovely oblique moments of its own, and a fantastic stair for some album cover photos. by @isssstudio

Reminiscing about last week’s event in Paris celebrating the release of Oblique Experiments and thankful for the opportunity and such a great turnout! Organized by Confluence Institute and Volume bookstore—two key venues in the Parisian architecture world—the launch give me the opportunity to talk about my research, show my drawings, and discuss the book (and of course the future of architecture) with the legendary architect Odile Decq and the architecture curator and former director of the Cité de l’Architecture Francis Rambert. A true honor, privilege, and joy to see so many friends and new faces in the packed gallery, and even some folks watching through the storefront window. Thank you @decqodile and everyone at @confluence_institute for making this happen, thanks to Mr. Rambert for a stimulating conversation, to everyone for kindly showing up and showing interest, and for buying some books from @librairie_volume too. Plus book signing and a chance to see the drawings I made for the book exhibited for the first time. In English. Please come by to say coucou and buy a copy of Oblique Experiments on sale now at @librairie_volume! by @isssstudio

What a magical evening in Austin: house full of hometown friends, colleagues, students, and new faces gathered for the release of my book Oblique Experiments, all thanks to @firstlightbooks as our lovely hosts. I could not have asked for a more articulate and engaged conversation pal than the brilliant @marklifeofthemind. This community knows how to support, care, show up, and ask great questions like no other. My gratitude goes to everyone interested in this work, and to the many folks that picked up a copy of the book so far I wish happy reading. My heart is full and I’m still all smiles. Arthur Erickson, Museum of Anthropology (1976) — with not a lot of free time in town, I am glad I got to spend an afternoon with this building. The cascading structure, which reveals itself as you move through and around the museum, is accompanied by gently sloped floors throughout. The amazing collection is a story for another day. Now off to reviews! by @isssstudio

Still buzzing from an insanely inspiring last week at @center_rog in Ljubljana (Slovenia) for @rogdesigndays. I had the honor of mentoring five emerging designers: @pot2grid @round.cas @vi_tudzharova @kuntzpauline and @sa.ra.bologna as we worked on a design challenge that I created for them—Hybrid Constructions: Column as Life Support. We explored hybridity as both a material and functional condition, using the architectural column as a scaler and structural framework. So much amazing work happened in such a compressed period of time, resulting in an exhibition of our work along with four other teams led by four other international design mentors. The show is on view until early February, along with many other programs currently on view. Many thanks for this special invitation to be part of this project, and for everyone who collaborated with us across multiple labs. Rog is an extraordinary public institution run by remarkable people in a very special city. My heart is full (and yes, we even got to cook together!). Photos 2, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 are by Tine Lisjak. by @isssstudio

While waiting for my book Oblique Experiments to ship for those who pre-ordered it and to the stores, here is an earlier article that became the book’s Chapter 2. Peer reviewed and published in the PLAN Journal, this article and the later (more developed) book chapter capture Claude Parent’s tour of France during which he shared his experimental ideas about architecture with diverse audiences. Earlier this year I was honored with a second place TPJ Best Paper Award by the journal’s editorial advisory board. You can find a link to the article in my bio (it is published in open access format). For those of you that are interested but have not yet pre-ordered my book, I hope you will do so through bookshop.org (with a link in the same place). by @isssstudio
