How do you make a music video express multiple feelings happening at once?While developing the visual language for Gods in Heat, I kept coming back to the work of Leslie Hewitt. Her photographs allow different times, places, political and social memories to exist in the same frame.That was when I stopped thinking about individual shots and was able to step back and see the possibility of using competing images and information.Juxtaposition really made it clear to me that this video can have layers to it, it doesn’t just need to be one image, it can and should be a layering of place, feeling and time, significant on their own but also changes the meaning of everything around it, including the images before and after.It also became clear that live action alone couldn’t carry the feeling I heard in the music.
