⭐️ About Us ⭐️

"What are those instruments?"

The marimba is a traditional Zimbabwean instrument with historical roots in the British colonization of the region, as well as musical similarities to the older, more traditional Zimbabwean instrument of the mbira. Most of the songs we play are adaptations of songs written by Zimbabwean composers, although some come from composers in the other regions of Africa and the United States. By playing their beautiful music, we hope to share the stories of the Zimbabwean people.

"How did the group start?"

We started playing together in 2017. Our fifth grade teacher, Tom Scott, who travelled the world and learned how to play marimba from the experts, had a corner in his classroom full of the insruments and taught groups of students in his classes each year to play them , meeting twice a week in the mornings before the school day started. Although he would no longer be our teacher the next year, we decided to keep the group going, and continued practicing on our own time and learning new songs. We're no longer affiliated with our school as a band, but since then, the group has stuck together and we now play several performances every year across Bend!

"Where do your performance donations go?"

Over the years we have donated several thousand dollars from our performances to various nonprofits, including The Trevor Project and support groups for the Australian wildfires. However, the main charity we donate to is a group called Nhimbe for Progress, which supports educational and health initiatives in poverty-stricken regions of Africa. If you would like to contribute, you can donate directly to the website ancient-ways.org, or donate at our not-for-profit performances! 💛

First performance of the summer, done! ✅ Thank you to everyone who came out to watch and support, and a big thank you to @brownbagpopcornco for hosting us! It was a blast playing for the annual popcorn eating contest!
We hope to see everyone at 10am tomorrow, July 7th, for our performance at the @nwxfarmersmarket! We will be set up in the intersection by Sparrow Bakery so come stop by and enjoy some music while exploring the market! 💐 by @isu.vana
