A group of Illinois State students, faculty, and staff is spending part of the summer in Ecuador through Alternative Breaks, combining service, cultural learning, and community engagement. The team is volunteering at a preschool in Quito and later traveling to Yunguilla to learn about conservation and eco-tourism efforts. From cleaning rivers and lakes in Tennessee to hand-picking pineapples on a family farm in Costa Rica, senior biology major Emily Drew has participated in five @isualtbreaks trips, spanning four different countries, experiencing what she passionately calls “AB magic.”

Redbirds bring color to the Salama School 🎨

The Alternative Summer Break team in Ngong, Kenya, helped paint three classrooms at the school, which were built recently after funding efforts resulting from previous Alternative Breaks teams. Check out our progress over the course of three days of service! #RedbirdImpact by @isualtbreaks

Eleven Redbirds spent part of their summer serving families at a preschool in Quito, Ecuador, during an @isualtbreaks trip. Nestled in the cloud forests along the slopes of Pichincha volcano, the group planted a garden, refurbished playground equipment, painted colorful designs throughout the school, and explored some of the city’s breathtaking cultural landmarks. ⛰️ ✈️

Alternative Break weekends are BACK! 🍂

Get involved in the Bloomington-Normal community this Fall with us! We're volunteering with the Haunted Trail on Friday, 10/16 and the WBRP Book Bike program on Saturday, 10/17. This opportunity is FREE, but spots are limited to 15 students.
