As an industrial design student at Iowa State, Anthony Ward (BID 2021 Industrial Design) gained hands-on experience through sponsored studios and entrepreneurial programs like CYstarters, building skills in product development, manufacturing and business. Those opportunities helped launch his career with Canyon Coolers, where he now serves as COO and is helping create new opportunities for current Iowa State students through industry sponsored projects. Ten architecture and urban and regional planning students returned from Berlin 2026: Urban Form and Urban Nature, a three-week summer study abroad program focused on sustainable design and climate-responsive cities.

Based at the AEDES Architecture Network Campus, a hub for architectural creativity and exchange in Berlin, students were immersed in current European design conversations while exploring how urban form and urban nature shape the city. Through site visits, lectures, and workshops, they studied Berlin at multiple scales and learned how design decisions impact energy, comfort, and everyday life.

The program also fostered international collaboration, as students worked alongside a group of eight students and faculty member Alexander Kader from the German University of Oman in Muscat. The exchange provided opportunities to share perspectives on climate-responsive design and urban development across different cultural and environmental contexts.

The program included field trips to Dessau and Hamburg, visits to leading design firms, and a hands-on workshop with climate engineers, giving students real-world insight into designing with sun, light, and air. Kristen Nelson and James Leach from Mercy Detroit also volunteered with the program, supporting students throughout the experience.

Led by Ulrike Passe, professor of architecture, the study abroad program challenged students to think critically about climate, design, and the future of cities while building global perspectives and practical skills. @isu.arch @aedesberlin by @isucollegeofdesign

Eleven of our interior design students spent two weeks in Italy as part of Bridging Disciplines: Innovating Exhibition Design for Global Food and Agriculture Awareness, an immersive study abroad program.

Students traveled to Rome, Milan, and Venice, visiting precedent sites, museums, and historic landmarks while exploring how exhibition design can communicate complex global issues. They experienced the 2026 Venice Biennale Arte and met with experts at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.

The program challenged students to connect research with design and create work that informs and engages diverse audiences, while building skills in collaboration, critical thinking, and designing for impact in a global context. The program was led by interior design associate professor of practice Mike Ford, who recently retired after nine years on the Iowa State faculty, along with Simone Bove, Rome Program Resident Director. @isuintd @fao @labiennale by @isucollegeofdesign

Fourteen students just returned from spending four weeks in Rome as part of the Morning in Roma study abroad program.

With most class time spent on foot, students in landscape architecture, architecture, and chemical engineering explored the city at a human scale, seeing how ancient and modern layers shape the way people move and connect. Led by associate professor Michael Martin, the experience builds real world skills in observation, design thinking, and cultural awareness.
