When traveling to Japan as a vegan, you might find yourself asking a few questions:
🤔 Is being vegan in Japan difficult?

The answer to all these questions is: YES. 🤩

‼️BUT! Here comes the catch: Veganism is not well-known in Japan, and even “plant-based” labeled food often contains animal products. So, it is more challenging to be vegan compared to Western countries. 😔

I’ve lived in Japan for 10+ years, 8 of them as a vegan. Having experienced the “vegan struggle” firsthand, I decided to write this guide to help you and make it easier! 💪
This vegan guide is a collection of my experiences and serves as your “vegan travel companion.” 💚

It took over a year from the initial idea to finally making this dream a reality! Writing the story itself happened relatively quickly, but finding the right illustrator and the people who could help bring it to life wasn’t easy.

Thanks to Chiharu (@chiharu.toronto ) from Vegan Kids Project Japan (@vegankidsproject ), who created Japan’s first vegan children’s book, I was connected with wonderful people who were happy to help make this project happen. 💚💚💚

The illustrator @takkun_suzuki did an amazing job bringing the story to life through his beautiful illustrations, and the editor helped make the book’s layout just perfect while also supporting me with communication with the self-publishing company.

I’m SO excited for the live reading with piano accompaniment on October 24th, which is also the day my crowdfunding campaign launches! 😍

This sweet is called imagawayaki, and it’s considered the predecessor of the well-known taiyaki, the fish-shaped cake!

❗️Careful: Not all imagawayaki are vegan-friendly! In fact, this is the first time I’ve come across imagawayaki that are accidentally vegan.

The chain Gozasōrō specializes in these delicious red and white bean-filled cakes, made without eggs or dairy. You can find their stores in Tokyo, Osaka, and several other areas across Japan!

Both fillings, red bean paste and white bean paste, are absolutely delicious. I really can’t decide which one I like more!

I am SO incredibly excited about this, and it still feels surreal! I never would have imagined that I would write an actual book, but here we are. It’s really happening! 🥹

The illustrations are absolutely wonderful, and they’re all hand-painted by the incredibly talented artist @takkun_suzuki !

Update on the kitten we found in the Japanese countryside a few weeks ago! 🤩

We named him Umi-chan since we found him close to a beach.
He was so tiny and scrawny, but very cuddly and seemed to be used to humans.

A huge thank you to my two hero friends @vegan.hokkahoka and @naturelovingvegan who were able to foster him until we find him a forever home!!! Thank you!!! 🥹💚
(Obviously I would take him if I could, but it’s not possible 😭)

The vet checks went well. He had fleas and was underweight, but thankfully no wounds. He had a mild eye infection, a slight cold, and a few other minor infections. Luckily, we got him some medicine and he recovered really quickly!

When he moved to my friends’ house, he acted as if he had always lived there. 😂 He ate a lot and was even already potty trained! (Or at least he knew exactly where to go and hasn’t had a single accident so far! 😂)

Now Umi-chan is twice the size he was when we found him, and he’s super healthy and playful!

We even found him a (hopefully) forever home, and he’ll be starting a trial stay soon! 🥰

Even though I’m sad that he won’t be living in my neighborhood anymore, I’m so incredibly happy that we were able to save him. 💚

I was looking for someone to read the children’s book I wrote. I mean, just because I wrote it doesn’t mean I can actually read it out loud, let alone in front of people PLUS in Japanese! 😂

And I am SO lucky that @merrina_ocean from the vegan singer duo @matsurika_vegan volunteered to not only read the book, but ALSO play the piano while reading! 🤩🥰

Thanks to Merrina and the wonderful restaurant owner Ena from @mer_art73 , who is providing both the beautiful space and the delicious food, this event is happening at all! 🥹💚

I can’t put my happiness into words. I’m just SO grateful and excited!!!

I also know this is a somewhat last-minute event, but to anyone who joins: it really means the world to me!! 🥹
