Lima, Peru. 1975. Under the left-wing military government led by Velasco, a Cargo Tricycle race was organized for the first time. Participants were ice cream vendors, recyclers and workers who had migrated from the countryside to the capital. The 72’ census showed for the first time that Peru had shifted from a rural to an urban majority. 'Marathon de Triporteurs' is a mini documentary exploring this singular episode in Peru’s modern history through the visual archives of Raul Goyburu and Ernesto Leistenschneider.

This documentary is part of the long-term research project 'Material Lab to Abolish Cars', an exploration of bicycles, labor, and urban resistance as tools to rethink mobility and public space. taken in Lima, Perú by @italo0meca

lds_01 is the first module for this project, a material lab to abolish cars. Builded around the classic 25.4 mm tubes, lds_01 (named after larmes de sirène) is has two purposes: useless and meaningless. Born as a tribute to old steel bikes and the ongoing bike revolution in Paris.

Misspelled twice, "Ludecindo" in Ernesto Leistenschneider's film (1975) and "Julian" in Goyburu's film (1976), Lodicinio Perez was the two time winner of the Tricycle cargo race. "Marathon de Triporteurs" explores one of craziest episodes in Peruvian history through an interview of Lili Pérez, her daughter, and anthropologist @mijailmitrovic.

Come and see this mini documentary at the Paris' Course de Triporteurs @lacoursedestriporteurs happening on September 20th at Cours de Vincennes. by @italo0meca

In one month from now "Marathon de Triporteurs" will be available for the first time at the Annual Paris Tricycle Race which takes place on September 20th at Cour de Vincennes. This 12 min documentary film is a one-year exploration of one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen in my life, recorded in Peru in 1975 and 1976 by Raul Goyburu and Ernesto Leistenschneider. With the participation of anthropologist @mijailmitrovic and the two-time champion's daughter, Lili Perez, Marathon de Triporteurs explores one tiny moment in Peru's modern history as a example of contemporary reality.

Special thanks to Guillaume from @lacoursedestriporteurs.

See you there if you are around

Lima, May 1st, 1975, Workers’ Day. Since the ‘72 census, the country had tipped toward the urban. Triporteurs race through a city where the informal economy is gaining ground, months before Velasco is deposed by Morales Bermúdez and the military regime swings to the right.

Albert Londres covered the Tour in 1924 for Le Petit Parisien and knew how to vividly describe the fear, the cold, the ordeal of the riders before “ten million Frenchmen howling with delight.” After the 405 kilometers of the third stage, he gathers the testimony of the Pélissier brothers and of Maurice Ville: “‘You have no idea what the Tour de France is —says Henri [winner of the Tour in 1923]. It’s a form of torture. […] We suffer from start to finish. Do you want to know how we keep going?’

He pulls a small bottle from his bag:
—This is cocaine for the eyes; this, chloroform for the gums…
—And this —says Ville, also emptying his bag— is an ointment to keep the knees warm.
—And the pills? Do you want to see the pills? Here, these are the pills” (12).

Hitler didn't create massive highways. The US didn't destroy its train infrastructure. Peugeot never stopped making bikes when it became a car manufacturer.
