🇮🇹🇺🇸 Grazie @whitehousehistory for celebrating the role of Italian craftsmen, workers, and artists who shaped White House history.
It is their work, passion, creativity, and dedication that have contributed to the longlasting and storng Italy-US bond!

The White House Historical Association explained:

Some were part of significant construction projects such as Francisco Iardella, who was born in Carrara, Italy, and is perhaps better known for his work in the U.S. Capitol Building. Did you know that he also carved several of the decorative tops of the White House’s North Portico columns?

Others such as Valentino Melah, who was born in the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (today southern Italy), served as steward of the White House for President Ulysses S. Grant and First Lady Julia Grant. In this role, Melah managed the household and its domestic staff, as well as attended to the president and first family’s needs.

The White House Collection features many fine and decorative art pieces made by Italian artists such as Giuseppe Ceracchi and Francesco Anelli. by @italyinus

Tonight we opened the Fall Meeting of our National Council on White House History at the beautiful Embassy of Italy in the US hosted by Ambassador Marco Peronaci. It was a wonderful evening for our brilliant Dr. Matthew Costello to showcase the White House Workers History project by telling the story of an Italian worker who served in the presidency of John Quincy Adams. Our dedicated board member, Anita B. McBride, previewed the powerful documentary on Constantino Brumidi, the artist of my two favorite works in the White House Collection, “Liberty” and “Union” created by the extraordinary film maestro Antonella Ciancio and produced with the support and collaboration of the Embassy of Italy in Washington. And the evening was capped by my colleague Sarah Fosdick inspiring us about our workday and events tomorrow. The National Council on White House History is the wind in the sails of our White House Historical Association education mission! And Italy is one of many nations woven into the tapestry of the architecture, art, music, cuisine, and special friendships over the past 226 years of the White House. 🇺🇸 🇮🇹

When Italian Nobel winner Riccardo Giacconi died in 2018, the New York Times called him the “Explorer of the Universe” and “one of the great captains of Big Science.”
Today, on his 95th anniversary, we celebrate the great Italians who contributed to key advancement in science but let’s also take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Francis Halzen, who was just awarded the @nobelprize for Physics, today! by @italyinus
