Unzucht - Kiss the Devil‘s Arse 28.08. - 31.10.2026 at Kunstbrücke am Wildenbruch @kunstbruecke_am_wildenbruch curation Johanna Engemann @johanna_engemann Wed-Sun 12pm-6pm   „Unzucht – Kiss the Devil’s Arse“ is Itchi Fleischer’s first institutional solo exhibition. Through Christian iconography of the sheep and the goat—symbols of supposed good and evil—it challenges the categorisations that have historically marginalized and demonized women and queer people within the Church. In photography, sculpture, and performance, these roles are subverted, ecclesiastical hierarchies dismantled, and the binary of good and evil broken down. Unzucht – Kiss the Devil’s Arse, @itchifleischer at @kunstbruecke_am_wildenbruch, Berlin
In ‘Unzucht: Kiss the Devil’s Arse’, Itchi Fleischer turns centuries of religious imagery and queer persecution into a world of hybrid creatures, witchcraft and unsettling beauty. Their first solo exhibition takes its title from an antiquated German term historically used to criminalise homosexuality, confronting the boundaries between what society has defined as pure and impure, sacred and sinful. Drawing on Christian iconography, queer subcultures and mythology, Fleischer reimagines familiar symbols through sculpture, photography and performance. In The Shepherd’s Goods (2026), the sacrificial lamb from Jan van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece becomes a human-animal hybrid, transforming an image of religious devotion into something bodily and provocative. Elsewhere, the satanic goat emerges through figures of witches, satyrs and drag personas, challenging the moral divisions imposed by religious and institutional authority. Humour, ornamentation and theatricality run throughout the exhibition, turning what has historically been labelled deviant or grotesque into expressions of resistance and vitality. Rather than simply reversing the distinction between good and evil, Fleischer questions who established it in the first place. Unzucht becomes an exploration of how bodies, desires and identities have been judged, controlled and ultimately reclaimed through art. On view at Kunstbrücke am Wildenbruch, Berlin through October 31, 2026

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The circular platform evokes both a witches’ sabbath and a pyre on which supposed witches were historically burned. The platform is engraved with a poetic chant, written in the style of a simple folk song. Visitors must walk around it to read the lyrics. The text acts like a curse that bewitches visitors and draws them over to the supposedly ‘evil’ side. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Building on the idea of the Agnus Dei, Jesus as the sacrificial lamb, and the wider notion of sacrifice and martyrdom in religious contexts, the work centres the absurdity of such practices. Referencing the depiction of the Lamb of God, which is part of the Ghent Altarpiece by the van Eyck brothers, Fleischer creates a new hybrid figure, half human, half sheep, bleeding from the neck. The blood is running down into a chalice positioned near the groin, a cheeky nod creating a kinkified version of the sacrificial lamb, as is already referenced in the title. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The rich ornamentation emphasises supposed subplots: whilst the devil laughs down from above, the sheep and goat are surrounded by herbs, alluding to the herbalist, a figure who, historically, was often sentenced to death as a witch. The buttocks, spread apart by hands in the lower section, echoes both the exhibition’s subtitle and the content of the centrally placed text panel. The term “Unzucht” was used in numerous religions, as well as in state edicts and laws, to encompass reprehensible sexual acts, including sodomy – a synonym for intercourse between homosexuals – but also sex outside marriage. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The sculpture is inspired by the mythological figure of the satyr. The satyr is part of the entourage of Dionysus, God of wine and ecstasy, and often represents unbridled lust. He embodies the perceived ‘Other’ and symbolises the categorisation of homosexuals as people who cannot control their urges. The mask is a depiction of Fleischer’s own head, thereby making their own personality part of the work. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The lyre is one of the oldest stringed instruments and is also associated with the personification of music among the Seven Liberal Arts, as well as with the muses of lyric poetry and love poetry. In religious contexts, as an attribute of David, it symbolizes faithfulness to God. Placed in the first room of the exhibition, it serves as a reference to the time-honoured tradition of spinning and telling stories, whether true or fictional. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ “Unzucht – Kiss the Devil’s Arse” is populated by mythical hybrid creatures and allusions to witchcraft. It explores these notions through the blurred distinction between the good lamb and the satanic goat—what the state and the church have classified as “pure” and what as “impure”. While the themes are serious, Itchi Fleischer encounters them with ornamental flourish, poeticism and a certain amount of cheekiness and irony, which are often part of queer aesthetic strategies. In their work, Fleischer often finds beauty in that which is marked as “outside of”, as leprous, abject or simply ugly and turns it into sculptures and performances which carry their own stories, resistance and liveliness. For "Unzucht" they bring references to famous ecclesiastical motifs, like the sacrificial lamb, together with queer subculture and some wicked witchery. The Goat, the Flesh and the Gaze performance, 2026 The durational performance centres the body as a site onto which histories of blame and scapegoating are projected. Addressing the dehumanisation of the feminine (women, homosexuals and queer people) through Christian moral frameworks through terms such as sodomy, the work reflects on how certain bodies have been stripped of their humanity and marked as other. Mythological imagery shapes a space where looking, judgement, and desire become tangible.
