Some of the people sleeping beneath the train tracks in Central Square knew the 38-year-old Marine Corps veteran before he served in the military, when he was a teenager and already struggling to find somewhere to live.

He grew up off Light Street and has experienced homelessness since he was 14.

He attributed this in part to his mother having dissociative identity disorder, a mental health condition where a person has two or more distinct identity states that control their behavior.

Now, surrounded by people he has known for decades, he is trying to find a home in the city where he grew up.

“I need stability,” he said.

The man, who declined to give his name, was among more than 20 people who were gathered beneath the tracks on Wednesday, including some who had been in his life for 10 to 20 years.

The suspect is an adult female. Brown wings, red highlights. She’s about one inch long, armed with up to 100 eggs, incredibly dangerous to the local tree canopy, and considered a flight risk.

The spotted lanternfly, Lycorma Delicatula (insecticus invasivus, Looney Tunes style), is rapidly making its way through Massachusetts. The number of cities and towns with confirmed sightings has tripled over the past year, now affecting nearly 150 municipalities across the state.

Jeffery Barile, former principal of Washington Elementary School, published his second book this month, called “Let’s Be Friends.”

The story is set in Boston’s North End in the early 1900s and follows two Italian sixth-grade students — Anthony and Gina — as they navigate the issues of immigration, poverty, bullying, and friendship.

Barile spent several years writing the chapter book, drawing inspiration from his career in the Lynn school system as a teacher and principal.

It’s been 30 years since 6-year-old Jesus De La Cruz went missing from his home in Lynn. Today, the case remains unsolved.

Lynn Police Chief Christopher Kelly, an officer at the time of the disappearance, said even after three decades, De La Cruz’s case has never been forgotten.

“As officers, we respond to countless calls throughout our careers. Most fade with time. Some never do. Jesus is one of those cases that stays with you,” he said. “I think about the little boy he was, the family who loved him, and the years that have passed without knowing where he is or what happened to him.”

Mayor Jared C. Nicholson will appoint Deputy Chief Christopher Kelly as Lynn’s next police chief. Kelly will replace Chief Christopher Reddy, who is retiring this month.

“Surreal is not even the word,” Kelly said of his ascension to the top of a department in which he has served for 29 years, starting as a patrol officer. “You get on as a young officer, and you don’t really think about this as an end result of becoming chief someday, but you know this is happening. It’s humbling, and I’m completely honored.”
