i followed some waterlogged estate sale signs to this house. the seller was kind enough to let me dig around for a few hours.

valuable prints were buried beneath decor art and mouse chewed cardboard boxes.

selling these items is my full-time job, he told me.

the seller used google lens to determine the value of his items. in one instance, the ai told him a mass-produced $20 poster was a $150k original piece of art.

he returned the poster, chafing against its broken frame, to the center of a jumbled pile. without room to organize, items got shuffled back and forth like cards in a deck.

the 15 paintings i purchased didn’t make a dent in his huge collection. because i never know what i’ll find, i love adventures like these.

but i feel a little sad knowing i can’t help this guy. he’s trapped under an expectation: that every item is worth money. that the money is worth the labor of researching, cleaning, listing, selling, and shipping. but value depends on condition. boxes of chewed up magazines pile against—and become indistinguishable from—rare and invaluable art. by @items1111111

here’s a tour of several dolls i’ve collected and am hoarding in my vintage shop. they are not for sale. they are for vibes.

i’m hoping to make more videos like this where i explore the history of and tell stories about items i’ve collected. making this video reminded me that video requires patience. each time i rewatch it, i notice something i’d do differently. posting it anyway, instead of letting it rot in my drafts until i perfect it, is also a skill i’m working on. by @items1111111

A $2 find: a small blue plastic slide box labeled “power plant.”The above images were mixed in among several distant pics of a power plant. Here are what seems to be commercial stock photos of NYC, ranging from the 1950s-1990s.

Labeled ‘Hal Yaeger’, there are two portraits of who I assume is the legend himself.

1 1970s nyc
2 1976 nyc
3 1970s nyc
4 1966 nyc
5 mid 1970s nyc
6 1970s nyc labeled ‘signs of times square’
7 year unknown
8 1959 NYC
9 hal yaeger???
10 the legend hal……..

“what’s your favorite thing you bought today?”

sean always asks me this at the end of a shopping/sourcing day. tbh we got so many cool things today i can’t pick one favorite. but while unpacking and cleaning today’s items, i stopped to admire these vintage paper shopping bags. because these bags were meant to be disposable, im impressed that they lasted 20+ years in near perfect condition.

i’m struggling to come up with something other than the cliche ‘they don’t make them like this anymore.’ thick, durable paper, matching colored plastic handles. fun 90s font. shout out to equitable bag company for these babies. rip filenes basement! by @items1111111

A complimentary address book given out by the Brooklyn Trust Company bank (1866–1950). This book dates between 1930 and 1950, each page featuring advertisements for businesses local to the 967 Bedford Avenue branch.

Using NYC tax department photos on 1940s.nyc, I located the recorded addresses. Some small businesses and tradesmen used a home address, while others had storefronts (like the locksmith). The site also has some updated photos from the 1980s. Because I was struck by the immense changes, I included the 1980s images.

The differences between photos, taken only a few decades apart, remind me that NYC has been in a constant state of flux since its inception. by @items1111111

A picture of someone’s once beloved pets in a four-inch-high Woolworth’s frame, the faded “99 cents” price tag still stuck to the back.

Found in a pile of broken miscellany. I recognize my own mortality reflected in this picture. The hexagonal frame is a little portal into a stranger’s POV, candid and unguarded, a vulnerable moment of their love as they watched their pets eating side by side, like people dining at a restaurant.

Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of STUFF that exists in the world. What’s the point of digging through it? I ask myself. Until something like this — an item with little to no monetary value but which once held deep sentimental value to someone else — captivates me. There is magic in connections to the past that are sometimes more felt than articulated. by @items1111111
