1. Self-insurance / savings and investments.

Build a large emergency fund and investment portfolio (TFSA, RRSP, non-registered investments, etc.).
The idea is that your assets become the money your family inherits.
The downside: it can take many years to accumulate enough. Life insurance can create a much larger death benefit immediately for a relatively small premium.

2. Employer life insurance

Some employers provide group life insurance.
This can reduce the amount of individual coverage someone needs, but coverage may be limited and may not continue if they leave the employer.

3. Mortgage insurance

Can help pay off or reduce a mortgage after death.
But it’s specifically tied to the mortgage, whereas individually owned life insurance can provide money to beneficiaries for mortgage, childcare, living expenses, debts, education, etc.

4. A large investment portfolio / estate

Someone who already has $1M–$2M+ in accessible assets may not need as much life insurance because they have effectively self-insured.
